The National Airports Safeguarding Framework helps protect airports and nearby communities by guiding land use planning to prevent inappropriate development around aviation infrastructure.
The National Airports Safeguarding Framework aims to:
- improve community amenity by minimising noise-sensitive development near airports
- ensure aviation safety requirements are considered in off-airport land use planning and development decisions.
Important safety considerations for planning and development in airport environments are covered throughout the guidelines in the National Airports Safeguarding Framework. These include managing the risks associated with:
- aircraft noise
- building generated windshear and turbulence
- wind turbines as physical obstacles to aircraft navigation
- wildlife strikes
- potential distraction to pilots of lighting
- protecting aviation facilities
- protecting operational airspace
- protecting strategically important helicopter landing sites
- public safety areas.
