Coal mining is not a sustainable source of energy. The jobs that are proposed to be created - 300 - by this submission are far outweighed by the potential employment that would be created through a range of other industries e.g. tourism, agriculture etc that could exist if this mining extension were not approved.

The Central Coast Region needs industry - how about the manufacture of products required for sustainable energy production e.g. solar or wind power?

The Community Environment Network operates in Lake Macquarie, Wyong and Gosford. CEN supports the principles of Ecological Sustainable development and opposes threats to it.
CEN objects to the proposed expansion of coal mining under Lake Macquarie for the following reasons:
1. Injurious to human health
Whilst the proposed coal extraction is to take place UNDER Lake Macquarie rather than surface extraction the grading, loading, unloading and transport of coal through the city of Lake Macquarie to power stations and to export terminals leads to an increase in air pollution especially fine particulate matter - so injurious to human health - from coal dust and rail transport.loading and unloading.
2. Contributes to increased atmospheric CO2 levels and accelerates climate change, sea level rise and global warming. The burning of coal contributes to accelerating rates of climate change globally.
3. Australia is one of the world's biggest contributors to rising CO2 levels and this proposal to continue mining, burning and exporting of coal goes against global trends to reduce CO2 emissions.
4. Australia should be moving away from reliance on fossil fuels. NSW government should be investing in renewable forms of energy not fossil fuels.

The Community Environment Network strongly objects to this proposal.

I'm a contractor at myuna colliery and my family of 4 depends on my employment for this project. I also live locally and spend my wage on local businesses.
My father has worked for myuna colliery for 30 years and has provided us with a good up bringing.
I have also seen centennial coal support local sporting teams over the years and can only imagine with the approval to grow myuna will help grow the community around the colliery .

I began working at myuna in 1986. I have supported my family and community always to the best I can because of my position at myuna. Centennial has always been a proud sponsor to our local sports clubs, some which would not have survived without there help. I have always felt proud to know I work for a company that supports westpac rescue and the YMCA thru employee donations. My son now works at myuna and I am very concerned for his future and his family's future . Our town and surrounding areas have grown . I feel without the mining community the area would not be as prosperous . Young families will have to move for work. Please keep us employed .

I support this modification. I am a Centennial Coal employee. I have worked at both Myuna and Newstan Collieries amongst others. This modification is a direct result of Centennial finding new jobs for the Newstan employees who were displaced when Newstan went onto care and maintenance. It was a credit to Centennial that they were prepared to keep as many people employed as they could and minimise job losses.

Modification to the Myuna Colliery Coal Project is vital in ensuring the longevity of a local workforce of 300+ employees. It will also also ensure Myuna continues to be a major coal provider for local electricity generation. Centennial has a good history of operating coal mines safely in the Lake Macquarie area, and with minimal impact on the environment and local residents. My employment and families way of life may be impacted if this project is not looked upon favourably.

Myuan colliery has a large work force that generaly live in the lake maquarie area. The mine supports these famialies that ultimately spend their income at local shops thus supporting the community in general.I am personaly involved with junior rugby league , Myuna actively supports Macquarie rugbly league tronto along with many other sporting groups on the western side of the lake.If this propasal was not approved it would put my job at risk and all of the employees at Muna. With the current industry state there is no other employment opertunities for coal miners, this would have a devistating effect on my famialy and all emplyees at Myuna.

I support the Myuna Colliery Modification Project.
The Environmental Assessment addresses all relevant issues in accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.
I have been employed within the Mining Industry for 18 years in both the Hunter Valley and Lake Macquarie regions. My profession allows me to work directly at operational level or indirectly through diverse project stages of an operation.
I feel it is fair to support an Industry that has provided continued employment for myself, my family and a large portion of the local community.
The Coal Mining around the Lake Macquarie area has been carried out over many years with minimal impact to the Community and Environment
The modification consent will allow for continued safe and efficient production and handling of coal at Myuna Colliery in agreement with environmental conditions, Continued Community support, local business sustainability and help generate employment opportunities in various Industry and professional fields.
