Since the vote of no support from the IPC, South32 has shown the necessary due diligence in ammending the mine design to mitigate all concerns raised in the previous submission. Dendrobium Mine is an integral and essential employer in the Illawarra and thousands of families depend on the mine for their livelihoods. The coal is essential for the continued viability of Blue-Scope for steel making and as such thousands of other people in the region depend on the Mine for their existence. To not approve this project would be irresponsible in terms of supporting the region considering all concerns have been taken into consideration and mitigated.

I support the extension of the Dendrobium Mine. The mine will provide an important local supply of metallurgical coal to the BlueScope steel making facility in Port Kembla. The mine will also provide an important supply of HCC to the seaborne market, supplying the world's steelmakers with a critical raw material in the world's predominate steel making process. Dendrobium Mine will also sustain hundreds of local jobs at the mine as well as continuing to procure goods and services locally, supporting further local jobs and stimulating the Illawarra economy.

As mentioned in the project brief and other supporting documentation the project will ensure continued support of economies at local and national levels through safeguarding livelihoods of both direct and indirect workforces associated with the project, supporting services to the mining activities and broader businesses and empowering Australian industries (directly steelmaking and port operations at Wollongong and indirectly all other businesses and industries including R&D facilities at univresities) to be resilient and self sustaining in the current global arena.
In addition, whilst the steelmaking is currently in need of metalurgical Coal projects like this should alleviate the pressure, by removing the demand on more climate intensive coal importas for steelmaking, on the Australian goverment and other R&D entities to focus their attention more clearly on developing and introducing more Climate-Friendly methods on making steel.

The DND project will enable the continued supply of coal for coke manufacturer, a key ingredient for Bluescope Steel to continue operations. It is very important to realize a domestic steel making operation given the logistics challenges of importing products into Australia

Metallurgical coal is a continuing requirement in steel making and I consider this extension essential for the short and medium future of steel making in the Illawarra. It also supports the local economy with thousands of jobs tied directly and indirectly to the operation of the mine and the steel works.
