This is very significant and important infrastructure for Newcastle.
It is difficult to imagine any better location for the indoor sports stadium where it can be in a central location, adjacent to other sporting infrastructure, with good public transport, cycling access, and car parking, and not taking up land suitable for housing. Taking up some green space is disappointing but there is other significant green space within easy walking distance.
It does not seem reasonable that Newcastle not have an indoor sports centre and it does not seem likely a better location will be found. Other alternative locations discussed, in fact, seem to raise more issues.
The proposal appears to address the concerns raised to the extent it is reasonably possible. I am therefore supportive of the proposal.

I think this project should go ahead as Newcastle is in great need of improved facilities not only for the enjoyment of our city but also for the benefits of the Newcastle Falcons who need this project to go ahead.

My son has been an active member of Newcastle Basketball for 5 years and the current Newcastle basketball stadium is now totally inadequate for the needs of the basketball community. The stadium is aged and leaks when it is wet and very hot in the heat of summer. Due to the large number of people who utilise the facilities the teams have to train in local schools or very early in the mornings. We have visited many different stadiums across NSW over the years and our stadium is sadly very inferior to the facilities that other areas are lucky to have. I wholeheartedly support this submission to service the large basketball community to have better facilities that service the need. This would be an asset to the Newcastle community.

Objection on behalf of my parents who are local residents:
This development will cause loss of green space for high school and sporting teams, affecting my children’s schooling and weekend sports.
This development will cause major traffic congestion around already busy local streets, loss of more on street parking especially when competing against events at McDonald Jones stadium and surrounding businesses.
We strongly object to development on this site.
