Attached is Friends of the Koala’s objecting submission on the Proposed Pacific Highway Upgrade - Woolgoolga to Ballina. Our objection is focussed on the unacceptable impact of the proposed route on the high-density, relatively healthy resident koala population of the Lower Richmond Valley.
Yours sincerely

Dear Sir / Madam,
Submission - on the Pacific Highway upgrade - Environment Impact Statement. Woolgoolga to Ballina.
I would like to comment on the preferred Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) route and the effects on the environmentally sensitive forest and wetlands, as well as the impact this route will have on the small coastal villages eg Wooli, to Brooms Heads as well the Wardell Heath.
Birdlife Northern NSW takes in the area from the Hastings River, NSW to the Queensland Border and out to Armidale and is the Northern end for Birdlife Australia in Northern NSW. Birdlife Australia is the only national conservation organisation focused on native birds and their environment. With over 100 years of experience across our unique and varied landscape. Birdlife Australia is the heart of bird research and conservation In Australia.
So far there has not been a base line study done on the endangered population of the coastal emu of approximately 100 birds to ensure this last remaining coastal emu population is not push to extinction.
The area is also home to 83 other endangered species. Some like the black Necked-stork whose population in NSW is also being eroded by not enough respect given to the endangered species and the laws put in place to protect them.
At present the preferred RMS route passes through a most ecologically diverse and intact forest, with no roads passing thru the area. Also putting the preferred (RMS) route up against the hillier forested area gives the RMS access to use fill from this area. And as you will see from the attached map this area in (Yellow) is home to the most regular sightings of the emu population.
The RMS can do better, by doing the right thing and supporting the original RMS Orange route and avoiding areas of high conservation that supports the endangered coastal population of the endangered coastal emu, as well as many of the other endangered species.
Birdlife Northern NSW also supports the concerns in the submission by D Charley of Coolgardie on further isolation of the highly fragmented Wardell Heath and its effects leading to declines in local fauna populations.
Yours sincerely
Heather Harford.
