Free Tree Initiative

The NSW Government is offering a free tree to help families in Western Sydney establish a garden for a newly built home to help ensure our future suburbs have a high-quality green canopy and are attractive places to live, work and play.

The Free Tree Initiative is part of the Greenfield Housing Code which will speed up the delivery of new homes in greenfield areas (new release areas) across NSW to meet the needs of the State’s growing population and improve housing affordability.

The Greenfield Housing Code requires a tree to be planted in the front and rear yard of each new home approved under complying development. The landscaping requirements in the new Code will ensure new release areas are leafier and more sustainable.

How to claim your Free Tree

  1. Read the information below to check if you are eligible to receive a free tree.
  2. Register for a Planning Portal account and login to start your application.
  3. Fill in the online form and upload your Complying Development Certificate to complete your application.
Who is eligible to receive a Free Tree?

The Free Tree Initiative is open to anyone building a new house in certain Western Sydney locations, who have received Complying Development planning approval after 01/01/2018

It does not apply to alterations and additions to existing houses, or granny flats.

Why is this initiative only available in eight greenfield areas?

The new Greenfield Housing Code includes a requirement for a tree in the front and rear yard of each new home approved under the complying development approval pathway.

Western Sydney has been identified as a rapid growth area, and this initiative will help to reduce urban heat in the area. More trees will complement new homes, produce cleaner air and increase shade in summer, raising the quality of life for homeowners while improving property values over time.

The trees will reduce energy bills by offering shade and will provide habitat for the native birds.

The Free Tree Initiative is available in the following council areas:

  • Blacktown
  • Camden
  • Campbelltown
  • Hawkesbury
  • Liverpool
  • Penrith
  • The Hills
  • Wollondilly
