Energy

The energy section examines the energy efficiency of the appliances and equipment, and the use of alternative energy sources in the development.

The energy section estimates the home’s energy consumption and compares it to that of a similar ‘benchmark’ home (built before BASIX was introduced in 2004) to see if it meets the BASIX energy savings target. The target depends on the home’s location and building type – it ranges between 0% and 40% - see energy target map.

The energy savings target varies by location to ensure the BASIX requirements do not place an excessive cost burden on developments in certain regions.

The energy target ranges from 10% to 50% reductions from the benchmark, depending on the climatic zone and the building type. The BASIX targets are determined from data provided by state and federal energy and water utilities, as well as long-term climate data from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Energy consumption and savings will be assessed on:

  • Hot water systems
  • Heating and cooling
  • Ventilation
  • Lighting
  • Pools and spas
  • Alternative energy sources
  • Other energy uses
  • Central systems
