If in fifty years every square metre of soil under the battery installation had to produce at least as much yield per hectare for wheat and sheep grazing as it would today under typical farming practice without any loss due to compaction contamination hydrological change or nutrient decline can the proponent guarantee that with full scientific modelling monitoring remediation and financial surety including third party oversight

Agriculture in this region depends on reliable surface water flows from Kilnacroft Creek Dead Horse Creek Bowna Creek and ultimately Lake Hume Any alteration of land contours tracks or hard surfaces will change runoff pathways increase risk of erosion reduce infiltration leading to both water loss for irrigation and greater sediment loads in creeks The assessment fails to adequately model extreme rainfall events or cumulative impact on waterways There is also risk of chemical leaching from battery infrastructure during construction or in disaster events impacting water quality downstream Farmers depend on dams and irrigation infrastructure which are sensitive to altered runoff patterns. Given current climate predictions for extreme rainfall and drought if the catchments feeding Kilnacroft Creek Dead Horse Creek and Bowna Creek are altered by this facility what independent hydrological model can show that irrigation water use downstream will not be reduced or contaminated even under worst case flood events

What are the maximum credible fire scenarios modelled what resources local emergency services will need what guarantee of water supply fire breaks and liability exist

Battery technology evolves fast Components may become obsolete earlier than expected Battery facility may be decommissioned or underutilised leaving industrial remains waste pollution
What decommissioning plan has been prepared what financial security is held what inspections and component replacements are guaranteed

Rural landscapes are valued for their scenic vistas iconic views sense of place Industrial battery infrastructure hard stands fencing lighting disrupt these views Light spill at night will be visible reducing dark sky character
What visual impact assessment with viewpoint modelling day and night was completed what mitigation (screening landscaping setbacks) is guaranteed and enforceable

Concerns:
- Fire and explosion risks plus re-ignition
- Pollution and contamination of surrounding land and water sources should a fire occur.
- Health risks due to toxic smoke should a fire occur.
- No benefit to the community. Economic or social. Benefits only big business.
- Environmental impact at the site, surrounding the site and in other countries that manufacture the equipment.
- BESS manufacture supports slave & child labour in developing nations.
- Visual impact to rural area. The introduction of large industrial scale BESS will change the character of the area.
- Carbon footprint- while BESS can help integrate renewable energy, its own production and operation contributes to carbon emissions.
- Lack of community consultation.
BESS are the asbestos of the future. There is nothing green, renewable
or cheap about it. Without subsidies from the Australian tax payer, these projects would have been scrapped years ago. The real cost to the environment and the health of the nation will reveal itself in the years to come.
