Official Caution issued to Broken Hill Operations Pty Ltd (PA 07_0018, Broken Hill City Council LGA)

On 29 April 2020, the Department issued an Official Caution to Broken Hill Operations Pty Ltd (BHPL) for failing to carry out their RASP mine development in general accordance with the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the project.  The Department’s investigation established that BHPL failed to comply with elements of the EA, resulting in the use of fill material in the construction of a tailings facility with a lead concentration higher than the approved level.  BHPL self-reported the incident to the Department, took timely steps to minimise any dust, and commissioned independent modelling.  Both monitoring and modelling results indicated there was no evidence of an increase in exposure of the community to lead.
