I support this project because it protects the environment. The project will contribute to emissions reduction and it will also support Australia's net zero ambition. Thank you.

The Merino Solar farm will generate clean energy for Australia while paying a big part in reduction of the usage of fossil fuels in Australia.

I object the Merino solar project for a number of reasons as stated below.

For starters, there was no proper community consultation. A direct quote from EDPR on June 23rd, 2025 states: "we can confirm that there are at least 194 non-associated receivers [not including the host landowners] within a 4km radius, and letters were sent out to all these receivers." Yet many didn't receive correspondence from EDPR and weren't properly informed about the facility's plans and changes.

I am genuinely concerned about the fire risks of the Merino photovoltaic project, especially if equipped with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are notorious for causing violent fires due to fast charges and discharges. During such cases, the insulators within the batteries undergo more physical stress which can lead to short circuits. As lithium is a reactive and highly flammable element, it ignites and burns at high temperatures with air and even water to fuel the fire.

As a regular visitor of One Raceway and properties in proximity, electrical and chemical fires are major risks. Fire fronts reaching the racetrack are difficult to plan and avoid if the source is only roughly 1km from the site. In such a case it is expected to see the asphalt melt, race fuel aggravating flames and expensive race-cars burning into rubble and vapour, not to mention the buildings and the toxic chemicals that laden surrounding areas.

Additionally, the Goulburn airport is situated in close perimeter, which raises yet more fire concerns. As pilots need to be able to land safely on an airstrip in this rural area, they are dependent on its landing strip. Sudden electrical or chemical fires cause serious troubles with light aircraft during emergency landings if they spread onto the airport and melt the runway, along with hot air currents making landing near impossible. Solar panels also reflect sunlight, thus posing visibility risks for pilots too.

There are heaps of reasons to object this photovoltaic power plant, amongst which I have decided for others to go in-depth about.
