I write in strong support of the Narrabri Lateral project, a critical piece of energy infrastructure that will deliver significant economic, energy and regional development benefits to New South Wales and Australia.

Economically, the project will generate substantial jobs during construction and operation, create opportunities for local businesses and contribute to government revenues through taxes and royalties. These benefits flow through the wider economy, supporting services, infrastructure and community programs. By developing domestic gas resources responsibly, Australia also strengthens its competitive position in international energy markets.

The project will enhance energy security and market stability by increasing reliable domestic gas supply, helping to manage potential shortfalls and reduce price volatility. Gas is an important transitional fuel that supports grid reliability alongside renewables, particularly for energy-intensive industries and gas-fired power generation.

For regional communities, the Narrabri Lateral offers a major stimulus through local procurement, investment, skills development and long-term employment. Associated upgrades to roads, utilities and services will deliver lasting benefits and improve the foundations for future regional growth.

The project will be delivered under strict environmental regulation and modern best practice, with robust assessment, monitoring and rehabilitation commitments. Contemporary technologies and management approaches will minimise surface disturbance, protect water resources and lower emissions relative to higher-emitting fuels such as coal.

This project magnificently denies that we are in a boiling pot of biodiversity and climate crises. The pilliga gas project seeks to provide a product that should be phased out as per IPCC recommendations. Already, the gas projects on this site have proven to be environmentally irresponsible with damaging land clearing, chemical spills, and impacts on the water of local landholders who provide millions of dollars worth of produce for domestic and international sale. We know that the gas project as a whole will inarguably pose significant threats on local biodiversity (no, an AWC compound cannot mitigate this), and available and useable groundwater from the great artesian basin. Environmentally and economically, Australian gas is not proving to be a worthwhile endeavour for Australians - we reap no tax benefits, local employment opportunities are minimal, and our utility prices are not deccreasing - why would we (locals or otherwise) think that this is a good idea? After decades of Pilliga gas dialogue, I have still not seen a single reason as to why we should host this project. As a local, I fear for my neighbours - farmers and Gomeroi folk. As a scientist, I fear for the bush and the groundwater and the inhabitants. I fear for Indigenous history (for the Pilliga is rich), sovereignty and dignity - this project will set up our Gomeroi peoples to again be discarded, ignored, disenfranchised. The pipeline hosts issues as per the gas project itself.

As a eight year old child growing up in England, I remember in awe doing a project about the Great Artesian Basin. This mind-blowing body of water under Australia's soil giving life to such a vast area. The size of it was incomprehensible to my child mind. Fastf forward 50 years and I live in this beautiful land now and have a greater appreciation of our ancient land and it's unique fauna and flora that we as custodians for the land and our many people must protect. I am extremely concerned about environmental damage to this unique and fragile area. I am concerned about the potential damage to and loss of the Eucalypt forests and native fauna, but, I believe, more importantly, that there is a good chance that there will be contamination of the Great Artesian Basin. Santos has had previous cases of dams breaking and serious environmental damage occurring. I have witnessed the clean up after one of these incidents and I don't believe that it has been carried out to anywhere close to the standard required.
We can't afford to risk this unique area as well as one of the largest groundwater sources in the world. The government must take its responsibilities seriously and object. This is a one way decision. There is no turning back when the damage is done.
