This project will provide a number of economic benefits for the region. The employment generation, tourism, beautification of the proposed facility will be a beneficial attraction for the region.

The community, social and economic benefits of this project are indisputable and the economic impact to the region will be significant. Employment generation, periphery services such as local businesses will benefit and enable council and local services to be added to support the economic growth. There are only benefits from this.

I am a historian and have lived and worked in the Southern Highlands for 45 years, including six years in Berrima. I have been actively involved in matters relating to history and heritage in our area for all of that time, particularly in promoting the preservation of our built environment. Berrima Gaol is one of the most important historic structures in the Wingecarribee Shire and as such must be retained into the future. Adaptive reuse is the key to its long-term preservation and provided this is approached with sensitivity to the building and its place in the local community, the result will be positive. I believe that the current proposal by the developer addresses the challenges posed in reimagining this important building. The redevelopment of the gaol will give a much needed boost to Berrima as a tourist destination, as well as providing a community hub for local residents. I am comfortable in supporting the project knowing there are stringent guidelines in place to preserve the heritage values of the site.

This is a submission by the Executive Committee of the Southern Highlands Branch of the National Trust of Australia (NSW). This Branch comprises more than 1,000 members of the National Trust and they reside in the Wingecarribee Shire.

The project is an appropriate adaptive re use of a community asset that will boost the culture, heritage and economy of berrima and the southern highlands.
