As an engineer and someone familiar with the level of environmental and in particular carbon reduction effort being put into this project I am fully supportive of the Blast Furnace reline. Given the impact of COVID over the past 2 years and the level of geo-political instability the need to have sovereign steel making capacity has only become stronger. I am hopeful that projects like this strengthen Australia's manufacturing capability into the future. As for the impact to the Illawarra, the jobs and level of technology involved in running and maintaining a modern integrated steel plant can only benefit the local region. This includes the existing and future benefits to UoW and TAFE working with BSL to provide skills that are applied practically to local industry.

BlueScope Co2 intensity is in the lowest 1/3 in the world and a supporter of local jobs, industry, community. This project will result in an improvement in global CO2 emissions - without it a high emitting international facility will produce the same volume of steel with more emissions per tonne of steel..
