As a resident of the NSW South Coast for 14 years and an employee of BlueScope for almost 6 years, I have witnessed first hand the enormous positive impact that BlueScope and its employees have on the region, both economically and culturally.
The project is vital to secure the capacity of not just BlueScope, but Australia, to produce its own steel for the Australian economy and possibly for export over a period of around 25 years. If the project does not go ahead, the business will lose its capacity to make steel, making the remaining part of the BlueScope business reliant on the importing of steel. Given our recent experiences with supply chain disruption during the pandemic, being reliant on imports cannot be acceptable.
The project will support up to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, now and into the future. There will be around 250 new jobs created during construction. The project will allow for more than $100 million of environmental improvement upgrades.
As a result I urge that the project be approved.

I think this project is integral to the economy and sustainability in the Illawarra. BlueScope is making a lot of improvements environmentally within this project, but it is a pathway to maintain the operations and economic stability for so many people employed directly and indirectly, whilst they move to an ever greener future for steelmaking.

I consider the project to be very important for the future of the Australian steel making industry. The project itself and the ongoing iron making capability it provides will contribute to both short and long term economic security for the local region, with flow-on benefits for a large number of local businesses. The environmental improvement upgrades are a positive step towards a greener future for steel making.

The No 6 Reline Blast Furnace is an important project for the Wollongong and in particular Australia and the world in terms of having steel production continue for at least 20 years. This project will support at least 10000 workers directly and locally in Wollongong which will go a long way to help the community after 2 years of covid related job cuts. I wholeheartedly support this project as an Australian, worker and a dad working as a contractor for Bluescope.

Steelmaking is vital for not only the Illawarra but Australia as a nation. The strive towards carbon neutral and the contingencies built into this plan to achieve it are world class for a steelmaker.

BlueScope values and long term commitments to the Environment are evidenced in their Sustainability Report and further through certification to Green Steel global accreditation. The long term benefits of manufacturing steel in Australia vs importing steel from countries less regulated such as China and India are stark. Full support should be given to the project. From my Materials Engineering knowledge there does not exist an economically viable alternative in Australia to produce iron for steelmaking (on the scale required for domestic demand) other than a blast furnace technology, nevertheless Bluescope has also committed to investing in future technologies to support a cleaner steelmaking future long term, this kind of investment is required to develop potential alternatives for the Global community.

I believe in this project. The ability for Australia to have capacity to manufacture their own steel products with out the need to rely on other countries is crucial. Bluescope steel is making a large investment in this project to ensure the best for the environment whilst also securing the future of many families and securing Australias manufacturing future
