As a Town Planner, active member of Newcastle Basketball community (referee, coach, player), I fully support this project. There is no better site than this one and nearly all of the potential issues raised so far have been resolved with the latest plans. Unless this project goes ahead, the current stadium will have an uncertain and short-term future ultimately leading to the loss of an existing community asset that provides significant health and well-being benefits to the community. Over 10,000 existing indoor sport members will have no place to play. When it does go ahead, the project has enormous health and well-being benefits for Newcastle and the region. Social, climatic and development trends are increasing
the popularity of indoor sports. Per square meter, an indoor facility can accommodate up to 10 times the activity of outdoor facilities and provide protection from extreme weather. They facilitate community cohesiveness and social connectivity and act as a focal point for the community bringing together a diverse range of users. Once built these facilities are sustainable operations that don’t need to be subsidised by the rest of the community. This is truly a community sport and recreation asset that will provide lasting benefits for the region for decades to come. The opportunity is here and now to achieve a great outcome for the community.

A new basketball precinct has been overdue for some time, and is becoming more and more necessary with the growing popularity of the game in Newcastle.
It has been proposed at multiple locations and changed, with the current location making the most sense.
It will help drive the area

My son has played basketball with Newcastle Basketball since he was 7 years old, he is now 16. He has been playing representative basketball since he was 9. My husband played as a teenager and young adult. Both played at the current stadium.
The current stadium is not fit for purpose and the size and facilities do not meet the demands of this growing sport that my son wants to remain involved in.
It makes sense to have the stadium build in Newcastle City Council as that's where most of the users reside. It makes sense to have it close by to other sporting precincts and public transport, and the suggested location meets that need.
We are currently living over the road from National Park in Hamilton South, and although the local street parking might be impacted, it's something you adjust to.
The benefits to health and community that could be gained from this project are enormous. The design is beautiful and well-imagined.
I hope it goes ahead

The Hunter is in desperate need of this kind of sporting precinct. Its ridiculous a major city like Newcastle doesn't already have these facilities.

The area where the new Hunter Indoor Centre is proposed is bounded by a main road, school and housing and opposite McDonald Jones Stadium and the Hockey field . When Mcdonald Jones Stadium and/or hockey field are hosting games/events and other sporting events held on the Park and Oval, the area cannot deal with the amount of vehicles coming into the area to attend these events. My street being Karoola Road and car park of the swimming pool are used for car parking which is 1.6 km from the area confirming the lack of available car space around the immediate vicinity of those two Large venues. . Traffic congestion after these events can take 15-20 minutes for cars to leave. Current road infrastructure struggles to meet the demand for parking and if the basketball stadium was to placed in that area, the area would become a bottle-neck of cars coming and going from 3 major sporting areas in Newcastle. The car park of the McDonald Jones Stadium and the Hockey fields does not have enough car spaces to accommodate the amount of cars at events held there currently and always spill over to the surrounding residential streets and going further than 2klms to get a car space during these events. With the increased use of McDonald Jones Stadium and the Hockey fields to host not only local but international sporting events and hold Concerts for International Stars all year round the surrounding area is struggling to meet the needs of cars. The infracstructure of the local area cannot cope with current traffic . It would be in the best interests of Newcastle for the McDonald Jones Stadium and the Hockey field that Council try to address the current parking issues in Lambton created by the stadium and the Hockey Field - not add to the problem by proposed a very large internatinal sports arena . The current use of Wallarah Park and Blackley Oval is by the local school, local sporting associations and families the parking is limited and spills over to the residential areas and just copes when no other event is on near by. I would therefore suggest that the Hunter In Door Sports Stadium be moved to a much larger area where infrastructure can be built to accommodate the people/cars attend the Centre. We are limited with green space in the Lambton area for families to use for sporting events and general family fun so taking away this large area would be detrimental to the area and all families that use this space. A fantastic community asset that Newcastle deserves. A practical location that compliments the area, including schools, other sporting organizations and residents.
Newcastle urgently needs a facility like this.
