I'm a local resident who plays in a Newcastle Basketball league and I am in support of the project to enable greater participation in basketball in the region. It is noted in the report that participation in the sport is almost half that of equivalent LGAs - almost certainly because of a lack of adequate facilities.
The concerns around loss of green space in my view are alleviated by the fact that directly adjacent there exist multiple ovals for outdoor sports including Ford Oval, Kentish Oval, Harker Oval, Arthur Edden Oval, not to mention the dozens of other fantastic outdoor sports facilities in the LGA. There are a much smaller number of available indoor court facilities for basketball and other indoor court sports and this development will rectify this issue.
I am also a father of two young boys who will be able to start playing basketball in the next few years and I would love for them (and myself) to be able to have sufficient courts to play on within Newcastle and a world-class facility at that as the proposed plans indicate. I have heard from other parents of older children that some have not been able to sign up their children to basketball due to a lack of available courts. This development addresses that critical need.
Another factor that commends this development for approval is that it frees up the location of the existing Broadmeadow basketball centre for medium density housing development - at a time when housing affordability is at an all time low, increasing housing stock and creating a more diverse mix of housing stock in the region is so important to allow Novocastrians to more easily own their own home.

I live adjacent to the footbridge in Monash road . I am very concerned about a number of items. Where will I park on a day to day basis as I believe that Monash bridge will be an easy alternative for most visitors not wanting to navigate Turton road access to car park . My street will also end up as a ring road for cars coming from the north and west 7 days a week. I also do shift work so how will ambient noise be addressed from people leaving the Venue via the footbridge . I have had no consultation from any official on this development. There are a number of elderly residents around me. How will they be guaranteed vehicle parking from their support services. There are also families with small children and being a local residential street how will the risk of a child being killed with a massive amount of additional traffic in the area be addressed. The roads are narrow and the street lighting is poor. With regard to flooding I read that there will be a possible increase in the risk of flooding to my home. Why should ANY level of flooding be acceptable? The vision for the adjacent hunter park and current stadium includes making the parking on that site redundant. Why is this not being considered in this development application?Could someone from authority please talk to me about my concerns . Regards

There are nowhere near enough basketball courts in the region and kids are being turned away as a result. This development is the first step to making the sport more accessible at all levels.

I HAVE GREAT CONCERN WITH THE IMPACT ON THE LOCAL AREA IN REGARD TO PARKING. THE PROJECTED NUMBERS OF ATTENDANCE PROPOSED FACILITY WILL GREATLY OVERLOAD THE LOCAL AREA WITH VERY LITTLE PARKING ALLOWED IN THE PLAN.
THE ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC FLOWING ONTO THE ALREADY CONGESTED LOCAL ARTERIAL ROADS WOULD BE GRIDLOCK.
EVENTS AT THE NEARBY STADIUM ( FOOTBALL AND ENTERTAINMENT) ALREADY OVERLOAD THE PARKING IN THE AREA. EVENTS AT THE STADIUM ARE PLANNED TO INCREASE. WHEN THE EVENTS AT BOTH FACILITIES CLASH THE TRAFFIC WILL BE UNMANAGEABLE.
THE HIGH SCHOOL NEXT DOOR USE THE OVAL REGULARLY AS DOES TOUCH FOOTBALL AND SOCCER. THE LOCAL RESIDENTS USE THE AREA TO EXERCISE.
IT OFFER MUCH NEED OPEN GREEN SPACE. NOISE BUFFER AND A WATER CATCHMENT FOR THE LOCAL AREA WHICH IS PRONE TO FLOODING.
THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS AVAILABLE. COORAGANG ISLAND OR THE ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE WITH PARKING AND EXSISTING ROAD INFURSTRUCTER IN PLACE.

The proposed area is current parkland and used by a variety of sporting teams from Cricket, soccer, schools. This will displace a lot of kids and adults. The area is a flood zone with drainage issues and the traffic will be horrendous given the narrow streets limited parking and close proximity to McDonald Jones stadium

The fields are an important green space not only for the local community as sporting fields, walking space and used for families to play sport, but also for the high school students. On any weekday you can see multiple groups of students using the fields for PE and during their break times. It is also used for evacuations, vitally important in an emergency situation. Without this space the school would have limited grass, if any, for the students to access. Not only is this a majorly important area for the school but also local sporting groups who use this space nearly every afternoon, and on weekends. Surely there are unused spaces, or other land, that can be found to build the new stadium complex on.
Once this green space and fields are gone, they can not be replaced. Why can’t the existing site be redeveloped? Please find a more suitable site.
