Dear Ms Fu,
Thank you for the opportunity to register my concern and extreme dismay regarding the proposed demolition of Griffith House to provide a new services access road and carpark within the St George Hospital Emergency Department redevelopment.
Demolition of this local landmark to make way for an access road and a few car spaces is difficult to justify, and Griffith House is regarded by many of us in the Kogarah community as a significant representation of our local history. As Griffith House was built by one of Kogarah's early civic leaders, Mr Peter Hermann, a former mayor of Kogarah, who also played an integral role in establishing St George Hospital in the 1890's, I believe that the building meets several criteria to maintain its qualification as an item of local heritage significance and should be saved.
Whilst I do recognise the need to upgrade the emergency department due to the growing demands on health services in our region, and support these plans overall, I strongly appeal to the relevant State Government Departments to review the proposed demolition of Griffith House and to give every consideration to retaining this building within the Hospital's redevelopment. Perhaps relocating the building towards the boundary on Gray Street, or reducing the number of car spaces currently proposed would be a reasonable compromise.
Yours sincerely,
Kathryn Landsberry

Hi Megan,
I am writing to oppose the demolitian of Griffith House on the St George Hospital campus.
Many beautiful buildings have been demolished in Kogarah to make way for ugly high rise buildings.
Please let Kogarah retain what historical buildings it has left, and keep the character of the past.
The most sought after areas are those with historial buildings which have been retained and preserved.
Lets preserve this beautiful house for all to admire for years to come.
Regards,
Gillian Cook

If Griffith House can be saved the people of Kogarah would be happy. Peter Hermann was the first person to live in the house and his history is important. When it was taken over by St George Hospital and named Griffith House, it had further history added to it. For this to be demolished for 9 staff parking spots is disgraceful. If the house cannot be saved then perhaps the facade can be incorporated into the building plans. We have seen too many historic houses pulled down in the Kogarah area.

Dear Megan
I am a very busy person and do not normally have the time to write letters about the demolition of a house but I feel very strongly that this beautiful house with so much history should never have been considered to be demolished. I do understand that St George Hospital needs to expand but this should not be at the expense of the destruction of something so significant to our community's history. I can't believe that this house built in 1896 does not have more significant heritage listing and that it can be destroyed without more community consultation.
Too many significant buildings are being destroyed in Sydney and you have the opportunity to save one. Please reconsider this before it is too late.
Yours sincerely

Dear Megan
The demolition of Griffith House in Gray Street Kogarah would be a tragedy. It is historically significant with unique links to the Kogarah area and is in good condition - still a charming two storey Victorian Italianate building. Its builder, Peter Herrmann Jr played a key role in the local community. He was Mayor four times and also served on the Board of the St George Hospital - ironic that they now want to bulldoze the house. The interior has been used for various purposes over the years and perhaps this cannot be restored but we urge that at least the façade be preserved and that good architects be asked to incorporate it into another building.
