I oppose plans to build an Energy from Waste plant at Eastern Creek for the following reasons:
The site is inappropriately located close to a densely-populated area and leisure facilities such as Wetnwild.
Waste incinerators produce more CO2 than coal, release toxins into the air such as mercury, sulphur oxides and dioxins (one of the most polluting chemicals).
There are currently insufficient air quality standards in Australia for these facilities. This incinerator will be burning 400,000 tonnes of plastic, metal and other toxic materials that are not designed to burnt.
The company proposing to build the facility has not demonstrated a sound environmental record. Any breach of regulations by the company will increase the health impacts of local residents.
Children in the local area are particularly susceptible to the health impacts of this incinerator. Western Sydney already has some of the worst air quality in Sydney (when measured at St Mary's) and poorest health outcomes.
The area is already impacted negatively by the rubbish tip at Eastern Creek with higher levels of dust than is acceptable.
Any reduction in air quality from nano-particles will most likely increase incidences of asthma and respiratory conditions. The area has one of the highest average summer temperatures when air quality significantly decreases. We cannot afford to make it worse.
Long term the impact may increase occurrences of lung cancer.
I therefore urge that this proposal is not approved. Please see attached document.
