Although I do not live in Sydney any more, I have spent much time in the Blue Mountains. When we'd have enough of the city we used to hop in the car and spend the weekend bushwalking and enjoying the peace and beauty of the mountains.
Apart from the fact that morally we do not have the right to steal this beauty from the world or from the future, economically, it is not rational to turn the The Blue Mountains into a mine field. All you have to do is drive through the Hunter Valley to see the awful effects that mining has on nature. The Blue Mountains are one of the natural beauty points that makes NSW attractive to tourists.
Mining is here today and gone tomorrow. It destroys the landscape and makes a lot of money for a few people. Tourism supports the community and is a source of income for many people. The Blue Mountains is home to many animal, plant and insect species. We (the human race) are destroying the habitat of other species at a frightening rate. We forget that we are part of an ecosystem and that no matter how good science thinks it is, it cannot do the work of nature. If the eco-systems die we will not survive - no matter how much men think they are above nature.
And lastly, people do not go to workplaces to relax and unwind - they go to nature - to the bush, to the sea. The outer peace and beauty connects them to inner peace and beauty.
So to allow this place of nature to be spoiled by mining interests, which although they purport to bring prosperity, bring the opposite (go to any place that has been mined and find the truth there), is against the best actions for the public now, and for future generations.
The mines steal the livelihood of so many other professions and works as well as the future of our children and grandchildren. Economically, safety-wise and morally we need to preserve what we have left of nature for ourselves and for future generations.
