Transport for NSW released a preferred route for a future underground corridor in Greater Parramatta. This corridor is planned to support the New Cumberland rail line, which will connect areas expected to grow significantly over the coming years.
Protecting the land along the proposed corridor is important to ensure the rail line can be safely built and operated, while still allowing future development.
To support this, the Department exhibited proposed changes to the State Environmental Planning Policy (Transport and Infrastructure) 2021. These changes identify the corridor location and apply protection measures including planning controls.
The exhibition period ran from 18 November 2024 to 10 January 2025. The changes were made in December 2025.
Why protecting future rail infrastructure matters
- Secures land for future rail projects, particularly underground developments, which require careful consideration of both the structural integrity of future tunnels and the buildings above them.
- Provides assurance to the community and industry that proposed developments will not compromise the viability or safety of future rail infrastructure.
