I support the project in its current submission form on the basis that it provides an upgrade to the existing port facilities on the BlueScope berths, allows greater flexibility in shipping operations, an improvement in environment controls and the ability to meet an increase in materials imported across the berth to accommodate a shortage in local coal supply.
The project EIS shows that considerable thought has been put into the execution of the project with consultation of various port authorities and owners. Given the location of the works adjacent to the inner harbour and the existing steel operations, it is very unlikely there would be any impact to the surrounding community as it is contained within the existing site.
Overall the project provides significant business and economic benefits to the Illawarra and grows the use of a significant piece of vital infrastructure in line with the 30 year vision for the harbour.

It is also a great benefit to the local community in creating jobs and future opportunities

In addition to the above, it's important for Wollongong because of the jobs it provides the local community.

I would hope that Bluescope adopts similar projects across the whole site to make the most of this very important region.
Too much of it has gone derelict.
