I live in Boggabri and work for Whitehaven Coal.
I was born and bred in Boggabri, as were several generations before me. My great-great-great grandparent's burial site is a local tourist attraction.
Mining has revived the local community and companies like Whitehaven have enabled locals to stay local and raise families, when they would have otherwise had to leave the area to find work.
I support the continuation of the Maules Creek Project as I value the enormous benefit to the community and the ethical approach taken by the mine operator.

We are in a climate crisis, and urgently need to reduce CO2 and methane emissions.

Extending this project would create more emissions both in the process of extracting the coal (fugitive emissions) and then in the eventual burning of the 30 million extra tonnes of coal.

It is unconscionable that this could be approved today for an extension which is not even going to start until 2034, and run to 2044. In 9 years time we will be experiencing even more extreme weather events due to the climate crisis, the political will to stop coal mining will have intensified and renewable energy will have become even cheaper. It is obvious this company want to lock in an approval now, as in 9 years time they simply won't be given a chance.

I am also disgusted to learn that this project would be done on state forest land - land that belongs to the public and should be kept as forest for the use of the public and habitat for our native wildlife, not dug up by mining companies.

Whitehaven coal have also been found guilty of illegally taking over a billion litres of water during a drought. They cannot be trusted with our precious water resources.

Please consider the impacts on our wildlife, our water, and indeed all life on Earth, and reject this proposal.

I confirm I am supporting the Maules Creek project.
Mining is a crucial function in the modern world. Everything we use to build, construct and maintain a comfortable lifestyle comes from products from the ground in one form or another. The materials that fill our life everyday are resourced from the wealth of organics, minerals and ores on and beneath the earths' surface. Without mining there would be no materials to build bridges, homes, industries, cars and technology. The roads we drive on, the internet and the computer I am writing this on would not exist. We still need good quality coal for power to keep the lights on and warm our homes.
Mining has created many jobs and supported businesses in NSW for a very long time and little communities need big industries to keep them going. I have experienced first hand what happens when a major industry in a small town decides to leave - and how that breaks apart the fabric of that community.
Having an industrial/rural/environmental background gives me insight and confidence in the system that permits and regulates all mining projects in NSW. Operations have to perform to the highest level of diligence to continue, so I am very confident Maules Creek has already met all its compliance targets, and will continue to do so under the scrutiny of government departments.
Mining deserves a much better reputation.

I support the continuation project of Maules Creeks. My husband has been working there for 10 years and would like to continue for the rest of his working life. My son hopes to start an apprenticeship there and have a career with Whitehaven Coal for his whole working career. We live in Gunnedah and having the mine and its workers here, makes for a thriving rural community.
