Scientsts around the world have made it clear that Australia needs to keep 90% of its fossil fuel reserves in the ground* if we are to try to keep global warming below two degrees celcius to avoid furthur dangerous climate change. Knowing that, a five year extension for more polluting coal is irresponsible, negligent and dangerous. With the outcome of the recent Dutch court case forcing its Government to reduce emissions, it's clear that by failing to heed the call for climate change action, all governments are at real risk of facing similar legal efforts if action is not taken iin situations just like this one.
"The new numbers provided by scientists* show that fossil fuels simply have to stay in the ground. Given these numbers*, it makes literally no sense for the industry to be allowed to mine for more coal, oil and gas," said 350.org founder and author Bill McKibben at the release of the recent study on our shrinking global carbon budget.
The NSW and Federal governments have a responsiblity to the people they represent and as part of the global community to recognise the undeniable threat of climate change and take action to address it. Now is the time to change direction, look to our clean energy future and stand up to vested fossil fuel interests that are holding Australia back from making the essential transition away from coal.
350.org urges you to show leadership, deny this extension and to take the necessary steps to address the world's most urgent issue. With coal prices falling and demand from China and India shrinking, I urge you to halt this coal mine extention and help Australia to participate in the global move to a clean energy economy.
Sincerely, Blair Palese, 350.org
