I have personally observed the surface degradation on the Newnes Plateas caused by coal and sand mining, over the last few decades, and I do not want to see more of that spreading even further.
The Newnes Plateau is a special and unique place, and it should be reserved in the National Parks system. This has not happened purely because of the mining.
Angus Place, Clarence and Springvale collieries have spread a web of disturbance over a large part of The Plateau, with their drill sites, boreholes, dams, roads, vents, pipelines, pumping stations, powerlines, substations, etc, etc.
Now they want to extract it faster and expand the area of mining.
The EA Project Justification is very vague, and to me it seems to be purely about getting the coal out faster to make more money in a shorter time. i.e. it's all about profits.
I find it deplorable that the Springvale Mine, whose Development Consent is due to expire in September 2014, cockily assumes that it will be full steam ahead after that date, with increased production and an expansion of the mining area.

I would like to voice my strong opposition to this proposal which would increase production at the Springvale Coal Mine and proceed to the next step of extending the longwall panels.
There are many reasons why the Springvale operation should not be increased and extended.
The main issue I would like tp point out is Centennial's failure to recognise the cracking of the East Wolgan Swamp above a longwall panel at the Angus Place Mine. The Newnes Plateau Shrub Swamp's must be protected, and until Centennial takes full responsibility for existing damage there is no hope that they will protect these fragile swamp's during future mining operations. There should be no mining under the swamps, with substantial buffer zones in place.
