The mine is damaging to the global environment as the coal will be burned, releasing damaging carbon dioxide. Eighty percent of known coal reserves must be left in the ground to achieve agreed climate targets. While scope 3 emissions are not previously considered by planning rules this will look very foolish in hind sight.
Threatened populations of River Red Gums, Hunter Flood Plain Red Gum Woodland and Hunter Valley River Oak, and the ephemeral wetland, Carrington Billabong, will be impacted.
The increased overburden height of 80m will cause visual amenity impacts and more dust at a regional level.

I object to Hunter Valley Operations South Modification 5 because the cumulative impacts of mining in the mid Hunter have now reached a saturation point. The people, water sources and biodiversity in this area cannot survive any additional permanent impact or increased levels of noise and air pollution.
The regional loss of visual amenity and air quality through the proposal to dump mine overburden to a height of 240 AHD is unacceptable and should not be approved.
This material should be used to backfill the approved final void.

I object to this coal mine because Australia does a not need anymore coal mines and the community of Jerrys Plains deserves future focused developments not a dinosaur like a coal mine.

RE: Objection to Hunter Valley Operations South Modification 5
Dear Sirs
We wish to lodge our objections to the above project which we believe will impact negatively on the community of Jerrys Plains and on us personally as residents.
We are long time residents of Jerrys Plains living to the West of the current operations at HVO within an area directly impacted by the Project. We already suffer the negative impacts of dust and noise and loss of visual amenity from the existing HVO operation. This is further exacerbated by the Wambo operations at Montrose East.
The proponents have publicly stated that the proposal has been designed to minimise impacts on residents in the Maison Dieu area. This includes "maintaining the outlook to the Wollombi Range from properties in Maison Dieu". The proponents have focused on this and they have ignored the very significant visual impacts which we will experience. This suggests to us that they did not undertake a proper and comprehensive assessment as they have not looked at all of the residents in the affected area.
We already suffer impacts from the current operations, including noise, dust and blasting effects. The overburden dump, at its current height, is clearly visible from an elevated position on our property. We have long lost a treasured view to the Ranges to the south east.
The proposed increase in height will mean that the mining operation will be clearly visible from our property. We currently have some protection due to the elevation at Carrington. However the proposal brings the dump higher than this line of protection. This will result in us suffering from increased noise and dust. We also have very valid concerns regarding lighting at night. With the design of the proposal such to limit the impacts on the residents at Maison Dieu, we see little hope of mitigation in regard to night lighting. Worse still, we will suffer a total loss of visual amenity and we are expected to look at a full working mine 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
We believe this proposal will have a detrimental impact on our health both physical and mental and our ability to enjoy our right to peace and quiet and enjoyment of our property. Further, it puts us at significant financial disadvantage due to the impact on property values as a result of mining activity in the immediate area.
Yours faithfully
