Australia does not need more gas. this project in conjunction with the Pilliga gas field will harm biodiversity, water and climate. The government's own projections show gas consumption has already peaked and keeps declining with the increased use of renewables . Yes, some regions may have short-term supply problems, due to lack of government planning. Existing gas supply should be redirected for domestic use, instead of new projects being developed.
Here are the main points:
Harm to the environment.
Greenhouse gas emmissions.
Declining consumption.
Australia has enough gas to meet its current domestic needs. Cheap export designated gas should be prioritised for Australian use. It is our gas, not the companies who export it and pay no tax.
Gas is a very expensive form of energy generation. Renewable energy and storage is cheaper.
Invest in renewals as they are the most cost effective.

I am writing to object to the Narrabri Lateral Pipeline proposal
As outlined in the submission by Lock the Gate, the proposal will have significant and adverse impacts on Gomeroi cultural heritage. Inn particular:
- The Pilliga as a whole has deep spiritual, social and cultural significance for Gomeroi people. The National Native Title Tribunal acknowledged that all water resources, and Bohena Ck in particular, is of major cultural importance to Gomeroi people. The Tribunal said there should be no ground or surface disturbance within 500m of Bohena Ck without Gomeroi consent.
However, Santos plans to drill the pipeline right under Bohena Ck and across six other major creeks, disturbing the alluvial groundwater. The EIS does not discuss the cultural significance of the entire Bohena Ck for Gomeroi people at all.
- Construction of the pipeline will also wipe out two known sites of significance and damage a further four sites. Gomeroi people have said the Pilliga’s integrity is central to their wellbeing and cultural practice and must be kept whole.
The proposal will also have significant adverse impacts on farm land and forest.
- The pipeline crosses 12 farms, and a little under half the land it will disturb is agricultural land, one fifth of the land to be disturbed is cropping land. The other half of the pipeline cuts through the Pilliga forest.
- Construction will clear 168 hectares of forest and will cut a 30 metre wide swathe through the Pilliga East forest, causing serious damage for microbats and small mammals.
- It will clear habitat and put at risk threatened species that have strongholds in the Pilliga, like the Pilliga Mouse, Eastern pygmy possum, and Corben’s Long-eared Bat.
There are a number of other issues, the most significant being:
- Santos’ Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the pipeline claims the economic “benefits” of the Narrabri gasfield and Hunter gas pipeline, but doesn’t take responsibility for the harm to biodiversity, water and climate from the bigger pipeline and gasfield.
- The EIS should be amended to consider the full negative economic impacts of the greenhouse gas emissions from the gasfield and the two pipelines, which is likely to be very significant given Narrabri is predicted to be the sixth biggest source of greenhouse pollution in NSW.

We need to ramp up renewables and stop destroying our natural heritage. Forests are essential in mitigating climate change and their well being depends on us suppporting them and the flora/fauna within.

Submission objecting to the Narrabri Gas Project lateral pipeline
We have a climate problem because we are burning too much fossil fuel. The Narrabri Gas Project and this pipeline make the situation worse.
I object to this proposal that will endanger the future that my children and grandchildren will inherit. I also object because of the risks to the farmland involved, because of the damage to Indigenous heritage, and because of the risk to artesian water supplies.
Government approval would be a deliberate act of endangerment. Please don’t do it.
Corporate profits are not as valuable as our environment and future living conditions. The expected corporate profits also come at my direct cost through increased insurance premiums and increased government expenditure on disaster recovery.
This project should not proceed.
Yours sincerely,
John Bell

I am submitting these comments as a resident of the Hunter Valley. My principal concerns regarding the proposed Narrabri Lateral Pipeline are due to its likely impacts on Gomeroi cultural heritage. The Pilliga as a whole has deep spiritual, social and cultural significance for Gomeroi people. The National Native Title Tribunal acknowledged that all water resources, and
Bohena Creek in particular, are of major cultural importance to Gomeroi people. Despite this, Santos plans to drill the pipeline right under Bohena Creek and across six other major creeks, disturbing the alluvial groundwater. In fact, the EIS does not discuss the cultural significance of the entire Bohena Creek for Gomeroi people at all.
Construction of the pipeline will also wipe out two known sites of significance and damage a further four sites. Gomeroi people have said the Pilliga’s integrity is central to their wellbeing and cultural practice and must be kept whole.
For these reasons I am opposed to the project and request that the EIS not be approved.

I live in Quirindi on the Liverpool Plains of New South Wales. This proposal for the pipeline directly impacts the Gomeroi people. This area is so important to these people and to all the people of New South Wales.
The fact that the pipeline cuts through the Pilliga and through creeks that are culturally sensitive and will disturb and possibly contaminate the quality of the ground water which is essential to us all, seems to be overlooked by the relevant authorities.
The pipeline will also cut through cropping land which many people in the cities would not understand the significance of. The security of our food supplies relies on these farms and the water supplies that they draw from. All of this is under threat.
The destruction of the areas of the Pilliga also threatens numerous species of wildlife and ecosystems that are required to maintain a balance in our environment.
The economic benefits cited do not outweigh the destruction that would be required to achieve them. The cultural ramifications could not be undone. There is no going back from this destruction to Country. Once gone, it is gone for good.

I would like to make my case for this project to not go ahead for the following reasons:
The damage and huge emissions required when searching for, extracting, processing and most of all burning of methane gas is doing to our environment.
Global warming continues to worsen. Australia signed up to the 2015 Paris Accord, but has simply ignored its obligations and allowed mostly foreign owned fossil fuel companies to continue to expand their operations with no thought for the terrible damage that their business is doing to our future.
The more local concerns affecting water, flora and fauna, farmland and indigenous rights make this a project which would not go ahead if we, as a responsible country, would not even allow initial consideration.
Please work towards a sustainable future which does not involve these dirty projects which have a limited financial future while intensifying global warming and the storms, floods, droughts and heatwaves which accompany them.

This is a damaging and polluting pipeline and will open up the Pilliga for Santos’ 850 well Narrabri coal seam gasfield.
Make no mistake, we don’t need new gas. This is all about the greedy gas corporations making more eye-watering profits - at the expense of our climate and future.
Instead of doing the bidding of the powerful gas cartel, the Government should be fast tracking electrification and ending new gas connections for households, while supporting low-income households to transition to healthier, renewable powered homes - with lower energy bills!
Key points:
Impacts on Gomeroi cultural heritage:
• The Pilliga as a whole has deep spiritual, social and cultural significance for Gomeroi people. The National Native Title Tribunal acknowledged that all water resources, and Bohena Ck in particular, is of major cultural importance to Gomeroi people. The Tribunal said there should be no ground or surface disturbance within 500m of Bohena Ck without Gomeroi consent.
• However, Santos plans to drill the pipeline right under Bohena Ck and across six other major creeks, disturbing the alluvial groundwater. The EIS does not discuss the cultural significance of the entire Bohena Ck for Gomeroi people at all.
• Construction of the pipeline will also wipe out two known sites of significance and damage a further four sites. Gomeroi people have said the Pilliga’s integrity is central to their wellbeing and cultural practice and must be kept whole.
Impacts on farm land and forest
• The pipeline crosses 12 farms, and a little under half the land it will disturb is agricultural land, one fifth of the land to be disturbed is cropping land. The other half of the pipeline cuts through the Pilliga forest.
• Construction will clear 168 hectares of forest and will cut a 30 metre wide swathe through the Pilliga East forest, causing serious damage for microbats and small mammals.
• It will clear habitat and put at risk threatened species that have strongholds in the Pilliga, like the Pilliga Mouse, Eastern pygmy possum, and Corben’s Long-eared Bat.
Other issues
• Santos’ Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the pipeline claims the economic “benefits” of the Narrabri gasfield and Hunter gas pipeline, but doesn’t take responsibility for the harm to biodiversity, water and climate from the bigger pipeline and gasfield.
• The EIS should be amended to consider the full negative economic impacts of the greenhouse gas emissions from the gasfield and the two pipelines, which is likely to be very significant given Narrabri is predicted to be the sixth biggest source of greenhouse pollution in NSW.

I object as I oppose the Narrabri Lateral Pipeline
I am very concerned re effects on groundwater levels and our continued distraction of the environment whrn alternative energy forms are available using better science and technology
I am concerned on the impact on native bush land and farmland
I have worked a lot in the near and far west of NSW and there has been enough destruction
I have children and grandchildren and all my life have watched governments approve projects which have such long term problems
Please do the right thing and leave coal seam gas in the ground and stop messing with an already depleted water table
Yours sincerely
Dr Sarah Cooper

I write to oppose the Narrabri Lateral Pipeline proposed by Santos.
The impact on the Great Artesian Basin has not been fully considered. Coal seam gas mining pollutes ground water and disrupts water levels. This will not only impact the Pilliger Forest, where 6 major creeks will be disrupted. It will also pollute ground water further downstream.
The construction of the pipeline will also cut a 30m wide swaithe through habitat for threatened species, such as Corben’s Long-eared Bat , the Pilliga Mouse and Eastern pygmy possum.
The EIS for this Santos development does not take into account destruction of 4 sacred sites for the Gomeroi people nor the contribution of the gas extracted to global warming and the capacity of Australia to meet it’s treaty requirements regarding reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Please obstruct this rape and pillage of Australian heritage, the way of life for the local people and the destruction of pure groundwater source required by all who hope to live on this land into the future.
