Official Caution issued to Warkworth Mining Limited (SSD-6464, Singleton Shire LGA)
On 13 August 2021, the Department issued an Official Caution to Warkworth Mining Limited (Warkworth) for failing to design mine water dams to ensure no discharge of mine water off site as required by the Water Management Plan. Following a rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021, mine water discharged from an on-site dam and flowed off site. Warkworth have been reviewing engineering solutions to prevent further off site discharges, following a similar incident in 2019, however, they had not implemented a solution prior to the January 2021 event. The Department is working with Warkworth to expedite a solution and prevent further discharge events.
