Clarification on certification data reporting

17 April 2025

News

Registered certifiers are required to report certain data on their certification work to the NSW Government under Schedule 8 of the Building and Development Certifiers Regulation.

Whilst most certifiers are already utilising the NSW Planning Portal or the NSW Planning Portal common API to meet this obligation, some certifiers are submitting their data to Building Commission NSW using the CertAbility app. The CertAbility app is being phased out, with all future reporting moving to the NSW Planning Portal only from 1 July 2025.

How to use the NSW Planning Portal to meet this reporting requirement

Functionality is already available in the NSW Planning Portal to enable registered certifiers and councils to meet their data reporting requirements through:

  • Determining and issuing complying development, construction and occupation certificates within the NSW Planning Portal
  • Entering information within the Written Direction Notice workflow
  • Entering information within the Critical Stage Inspection workflow

Alternatively, the Department has developed  NSW Planning Portal Common APIs: ‘CSIPerformed’, ‘CSIMissed’, ‘CreateWDN’, UpdateWDN’. Please speak with your vendor for more information.

Please note: If you are not utilising the NSW Planning Portal Common APIs, then the Written Direction Notice and Critical Stage Inspection workflows are mandatory.
