I am writing to express my support for the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project and to encourage its approval and progression. This project represents a vital continuation of responsible resource development that balances economic, social, and environmental considerations.

The HVO Continuation Project will ensure the retention of over 1,500 direct jobs and many more indirect jobs across the Hunter region. These are well-paying, skilled positions that support families, small businesses, and community services. In a time of economic uncertainty, securing stable employment is crucial for regional resilience and growth.

The project will also continue to contribute significant royalties and taxes to both the NSW and Australian governments, which are used to fund critical public infrastructure, health services, and education.

HVO has a strong and ongoing history of engaging with and investing in the local community through partnerships, sponsorships, and support for local initiatives. The continuation of the project ensures the longevity of this support, especially in small towns and communities that rely heavily on the presence of industry for economic stability.

While coal mining presents environmental challenges, HVO has demonstrated a proactive approach to environmental stewardship. The project includes comprehensive plans for:

Progressive rehabilitation of mined land

Reduced dust and noise through modern technologies

Biodiversity offsets and water management strategies

Furthermore, HVO’s continuation provides a structured pathway for energy transition. As global and national economies shift towards cleaner energy sources, it is essential that this transition is managed in a way that does not abruptly disadvantage workers, families, or regional economies. HVO provides the time and resources needed for long-term planning and retraining.

The continued operation of HVO ensures energy security and supports the export economy. Until renewable infrastructure is fully scaled, coal from the Hunter Valley remains a critical resource for meeting energy demand in both domestic and international markets, particularly in countries undergoing their own transitions away from less efficient energy sources.

The Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project is not just a mining extension — it is a commitment to regional prosperity, community wellbeing, and responsible environmental management. It offers a realistic and measured approach to balancing economic needs with sustainability goals.

I respectfully urge decision-makers to approve the project in recognition of its importance to the Hunter region and New South Wales as a whole.

Hunter Valley Operations is an important part of the economy within the Hunter. Providing over 1500 full time jobs and supporting local families, businesses and livelihoods. The hard work and dedication, of all departments, towards safety, environmental responsibility and community is critical to the business operations and is done extremely well.

I am in full support of the continuation project for the benefits it brings to the Government and Local regions. HVO operating until the 2040s will continue to provide employment for a large number of people, provide continuous revenue streams to a host of suppliers and businesses and generally contributing to the overall economic health of the State and Region.

Allowing the continuation of HVO South will allow me to continue working in the mining industry which allows me to support my family with a good lifestyle and allow me to support my children through an educational program. Working at HVO has allowed me to gain skills that I would not be able to gain outside the mining industry. HVO have allowed me progress from an electrical tradesman to a maintenance planner.

This project is very important. It will support and protect the families and businesses in the hunter valley for many years to come.

The HVO Continuation Project is important for keeping local jobs, supporting businesses, and strengthening the Hunter Valley economy. It provides stable employment, contributes royalties and taxes that fund essential services, and backs community programs. Continuing HVO supports workers, families, and the region, while building skills and opportunities for the next generation.

I am writing in support of the amended development applications submitted by HV Operations Pty Ltd for the continuation of mining operations at HVO South and HVO North, located on Lemington Road, Lemington.

These amendments reflect a responsible and adaptive approach to resource development, balancing economic viability with environmental and community considerations. The proposed changes including reductions in coal extraction volumes, shortened project lifespans, and infrastructure adjustments demonstrate a clear effort to respond to feedback and mitigate potential impacts.

Key reasons for my support include:
- Economic Stability and Employment: The continuation of mining operations will sustain hundreds of local jobs and support regional economic activity across Singleton and Muswellbrook Shires. This is particularly vital in maintaining livelihoods and community resilience in the Hunter Valley.

- Improved Environmental Management: The amended applications reduce the total ROM coal extraction by approximately 220 million tonnes and lower annual production limits. These changes suggest a more measured approach to resource recovery, with reduced environmental footprint and improved long-term landform outcomes.

- Infrastructure Enhancements: Realignment of Lemington Road, construction of a new bridge over the Hunter River, and expansion of the HVO North ROM coal stockpile are practical upgrades that will improve safety, logistics, and coal management efficiency.

- Flood Protection Measures: The establishment of a levee to protect the final void in Mitchell Pit is a proactive step in addressing flood risk and ensuring long-term site stability.

- Community Engagement and Transparency: The exhibition process and the Department’s efforts to notify previous submitters reflect a commitment to transparency and public participation. The amendments clearly respond to concerns raised during earlier consultation phases.

In conclusion, I believe the amended proposals strike a reasonable balance between resource development and environmental stewardship. They offer a pathway for continued economic contribution while demonstrating responsiveness to community and ecological concerns.

I support the approval of these amended applications and encourage the Independent Planning Commission to consider the broader benefits to the region.
