HVO provides significant employment and opportunity for thousands of Hunter Valley employees. It provides high paying work, and delivers training in skills that are transferable to a broad group of industries. They are a great supporter of local businesses, community groups and charities. I had the privilege of being part of HVO for the last 2-years. In that period, I was able to recognize employees that have worked at the site for well over 40 -years. Many of the employees are generational employees, which means that jobs and families have been able to remain in the area , supporting local schools, businesses and sporting groups. I support the project, the people and the local community.

I am writing this submission to oppose the Glencore and Yancoal's Hunter Valley Operations Continuation project as I believe it would be responsible for 1.2 billion tonnes of total carbon emissions and is the single largest new coal project proposed in NSW since the Paris agreement. There are already eight new coal mine proposals in the NSW planning system at the moment which represents the largest increase of new coal capacity since the Paris Agreement entered into the force at the end of 2016. Coal mining emissions in NSW are the only sector that is predicted to increase which is totally unacceptable when the NSW Government is trying to move to reduce GHG emissions by 70% by 2035. The Global Methane Pledge, to which Australia is a signatory, requires at least a 30% cut in methane emissions globally by 2030 only 7 years away.

I understand also that instead of electrifying their mining fleet to eliminate diesel emissions this project seeks approval to increase its Scope ! diesel emissions by 43%by 2035. This would result in degraded air quality and prolonged air pollution which is harmful to the community. In addition Aboriginal Cultural Heritage would be impacted by this project as the aboriginal cultural heritage values adjacent to the mine would be harmed and this caused them to refuse consent to the Project.

The project would clear 397ha of native forest which is home to threatened species such as the legless lizard and the Hunteer Valley Delma. The Hunter Floodplain Red Gum Woodland on the North Coast and the Warkworth Sands Woodland in the Sydney Basin will be impacted. It is crucial that we do not wittingly, due to climate change through increased emissions, allow habitat loss, increases in invasive species and air and other pollution.

Glencore is not fit and proper to hold a mining lease as it remains one of the largest members of some of Australia's biggest blockers of climate action. Therefore Glencore continues to stand in the way of ambitious climate policy in Australia so crucial for the survival of the planet. As a parent and grandparent I urge you to consider the community and the effects that continued emissions will have on future generations due to mining of this magnitude.

We need the coal mines in the Hunter to stay open as I have friends and family working there and they cannot afford to lose their jobs. They deserve to heard and work in a job they love

I am personally all for the continuation project, with HVO supporting the local community and providing many jobs for locals I can’t see any problems with this proposal going ahead and I wish the company all the best with their future plans for the mine and the community.

As an employee at HVO the outcome of the continuation project will have a direct impact on my family. The income I recieve from my job provides opportunities for my 3 children Ben Josh and April that I otherwise would not be able to provide and would severly restrict their options in the future. I f the mine was to cease operations in the near future many of the hopes and dreams of my children would not be possible to achieve. It is for this reason I support the continuation project
