I formally object to the proposal for the Mallee Wind Electricity Generating Works, which is set to produce 402 MW of power utilizing 76 turbines with a tip height of 280 meters, alongside a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of 100 MW / 200 MWh.
The project will affect a site spanning 57,330.31 hectares, with a disturbance footprint covering approximately 444.69 hectares. This area will directly impact the Mallee Bird Community, a component of the endangered ecological community (EEC) recognized under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.
The proposed location is situated between the Murray River to the south and the Willandra Lakes system to the north, within an environment predominantly characterized by rural land uses and native bushland. Additionally, the Mallee Cliffs National Park, designated as C2 – Environmental Conservation, borders the southeastern boundary of the proposed site.
The project is spearheaded by Spark Renewables Pty Ltd, a spin-off of Spark Infrastructure that is now associated with Tenago Nasional Berhad. This is in alignment with current strategic initiatives aimed at modernizing the regional power grid.
The site is located along Arumpo Road, approximately 16 kilometers northeast of Buronga in the Riverina region of southwest New South Wales, and 22 kilometers northeast of Mildura, Victoria, within the Wentworth Local Government Area. The planning application reference is SSD-53293710, with submissions due by December 10, 2024.

(ii)that are likely to contribute to reducing Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
AEMO, and everyone in 'authority', place primacy on the emissions target rather than the other requirements of the NEL.
The emissions requirement was only added to the NEL in Sep 2023, with States tardy to legislate any targets, so on what basis did any Gov act prior to that to impose all this on us? Yet they all did, and still emphasise emissions over other objectives.
NEL is made in the SA Parliament, and in the 2nd reading, the minister there also reiterated that ALL OBJECTIVES ARE EQUAL.
As we have clearly seen proven at Broken Hill recently “Wind and Solar are worse than useless in a crisis like this, because it’s detrimental to having a consistent power supply,” Mayor Tom Kennedy said.
“I’d hate to see what happens in the capital cities in a similar crisis.”

I have also enclosed in this submission further evidence of the extreme risk of bushfires breaking out from wind turbines, the high voltage transmission lines the wind turbines, large battery storage containers, solar farms that are or planned to be connected to and the how the large battery storage containers and solar farms themselves are extreme bushfire hazards. Worse, it seems that the 2500 wind turbines in Victoria have no critical fire safety suppression equipment on them, which should be standard on every wind turbine, especially since they are connected to the high voltage transmission lines and the dangers of flashovers. What is a flashover and why is it so dangerous and potentially life threatening?

I have also enclosed in this submission further evidence of the extreme risk of bushfires breaking out from wind turbines, the high voltage transmission lines the wind turbines, large battery storage containers, solar farms that are or planned to be connected to and the how the large battery storage containers and solar farms themselves are extreme bushfire hazards. Worse, it seems that the 2500 wind turbines in Victoria have no critical fire safety suppression equipment on them, which should be standard on every wind turbine, especially since they are connected to the high voltage transmission lines and the dangers of flashovers. What is a flashover and why is it so dangerous and potentially life threatening?

Given the height of the wind turbines, their number, the flatness of the terrain, their proximity to a major river (Murray), domestic and industrial infrastructure, national parks and access routes, and the tourist and recreational nature of the region, the location is far too close to these amenities and, so, is totally inappropriate. Furthermore, given the inadequacy of road infrastructure in the region for significant increased road traffic, especially including transport of the wind turbines, failure to provide major upgrades to this infrastructure is not acceptable.
