The joint project between NSW DPI and Huon is a tremendous opportunity for regional NSW. The partnership between world reknowned researchers in DPI, and a world renowned aquacultural producer has the potential to transform aquaculture in NSW. DPI has undertaken rigorous and detailed research on the commercial farming of yellowtail kingfish and have undertaken an exhaustive study of possible production sites. With the benefit of Huon's production experience, this move in sites offers distinct advantages in lowering stocking density, deeper higher energy water and coarser bottom sediments so that any nutrients will be quickly dissipated. In addition any visual or noise issues are further lessened by the move offshore. This move is both strategic and sensible.

Demand for fish products in NSW is expanding and the the share of that demand being met by NSW producers is diminishing. This proposal is a very important opportunity to increase NSW's contribution to sustainable fish production. The partnership between world renowned researchers in DPI and world renowned aquaculture producer is very impressive. NSW DPI have made a major investment in establishing yellowtail kingfish as a commercial species. This investment has been supported by the Commonwealth through the Fisheries Reserach and Development Corporation who have recognised the significance of the project. DPI have carried out a thoroughly professional investigation of the appropriate sites for production. The alterations from the original sites and growing conditions have been based on the extensive experience of Huon. Environmentally and economically they offer significant advantages. The move to bigger area, bigger cages permits a reduction in stocking density which has distinct environmental and production advantages. This project is exciting and is the epitome of good science applied to an economic and nutritional priority. It will be a tremendous boost to regional NSW. If successful, there are opportunities for the expansion of off-shore production in other areas.

Following review of the proposed modifications I strongly support the proposal. Development and research into sustainable aquaculture is essential to meet the future food security for Australia's and international predicted population increase.

Hawks Nest Fishing Club is a family focused anglers club based inshore of the proposed aquaculture project. At a recent meeting and through general discussion unanimous support for this project was agreed. We strongly believe aquaculture research is important for the availability of fresh fish supplies into the future. Fish farming potentially will reduce the at times unsustainable harvest of wild stock and thus improve the recreational fishing experience. We can see the fish farm as an interest to locals and tourists and hope the chance of career opportunities arise. We wish all those involved the best of luck and success.
