I support the development, its necessary for the community and development of indoor sports in Newcastle. Limited facilities are limiting the growth and practice time. The city is growing but no the sports grounds.

I am writing to express my concerns and objections to the building of the Hunter Sports centre in New Lambton.
Whilst I support the building of a new basketball stadium, I disagree with the proposed location of New Lambton for a number of reasons.
1. The proximity to Lambton High school and building on Wallarah Ovals. As a former student of Lambton High, I firsthand know the amount of time students spend on the oval whether it be for PE or break times. Students also access the school through the back gate located at Wallarah Oval.
2. Flood zone area.
3. Proximity to McDonalds Jones stadium, hockey Fields, soccer and football fields. This creating traffic strain, congestion and parking issues.
I urge the relevant authorities to this about the long term impacts this would have on the community and to reconsider the proposed location, liaise with the communities to find a more suitable site.

I object to this project on the grounds that this is a loss of valuable green space, this is flood prone land and is located on an extremely busy road.
The loss of green space is extremely concerning. This green space is used by Lambton High School next door. It is also used by soccer and cricket clubs. It is also used by the local community - walkers, joggers and dog walkers. I exercise at Lambton High School three mornings a week from 6.30 am and the green space is always in use by the early morning walkers and dog walkers.
As for the flood prone land designation, this green space is next to the storm water drain. As a Licensed Conveyancer, I am aware that over 30% of Newcastle City Council area is designated flood prone land. I also lived in Newcastle during the Pasha Bulker storm and that storm water drain was overflowing. The main concern here is that the basketball stadium and associated carparking is going to increase the non permiable surfaces and could result in exacerbating the flood damage on surrounding residential properties. We are already seeing insurance companies either refusing insurance cover or charging exhorbitant premiums for properies in flood prone areas. I fear that this could push insurance companies to refuse insurance coverage on nearby residential properties and effectively resulting in homes that cannot obtain finance from lenders and homes that cannot be sold.
In addition to the loss of green space and the exacerbation of the effects of flooring, this proposed development is on an extremely busy road that is already a challenge to navigate during sporting events held across the road at McDonald Jones Stadium such as the NRL and Soccer and it is also host to major music events (Paul McCartney, Pink & Elton John).
I am in support of a new basketball stadium being built but I STRONGLY OBJECT TO THE CURRENT PROPOSED LOCATION. I fear that these decisions are being made by non-locals who do not understand the local idiosyncracies of Newcastle.
Lastly, it has only been hours since the Labor Government released their National Adaptation Plan being the Government's response to climate change and announced their 2035 emmissions target of 62% to 70% reduction from 2005. As a Committee Member of Climate Action Newcastle, I welcome the release of the National Adaptation Plan but I strongly recommend that this be taken in to account by the policy makers and decision makers especially in relation to this development. As you are no doubt aware, for every degree of warming, the atmosphere holds 7% more moisture and this results in an increase in floods. Again, great plans... wrong location.
