Water

Guidance to help you complete the water section, which examines the water efficiency of appliances and fixtures, landscape design and use of alternative water sources.

The Water section of BASIX sets water use standards to reduce the potable water consumption of all new residential developments.

The water use standards are specified in the Water Use Maps in the State Environmental Planning Policy (Sustainable Buildings) 2022. The percentages (which range from 0% to 40%) represent a reduction from the benchmark and they depend on the climate zone. The benchmark is 90,340 litres of water per person per year (or 247 litres per person per day), which was the average potable water consumption of a pre-BASIX home.

The 40% reduction standard applies to 90% of new residential development and 98% of high-growth areas.

Water consumption and savings will be assessed on:

Tip: Reducing the demand for hot water by installing efficient showerheads and taps will also reduce the energy required for water heating and improve your score in the Energy section.
