I lead a research group at the University of New South Wales. We have been modelling the impact of data centres over Sydney and have including this proposed data centre in our simulations. Our focus is on the impact on temperature during heatwaves.
Irrespective of how this data centre is fueled, 1.2 GW of energy will ultimatly be used on site. This energy must be exchanged with the atmopshere. We find that this is heating the surrpounding area (approximately 3 km x 3km) by several degrees during heatwaves.
Our research is on-going but we note that while energy use, water use, risk of diesel, and noise pollution are routinely part of discussions around data centres, the impact on air temperatures, and potentially the impact on human heat stress is not considered. We note one academic paper published last year measuring the down-wind impact of data centres in Arizona but equivalent studies have not been done here. We note that the impact of data centres on air temperatures is dependent on the size of the data centre - most are far smaller but 1.2 GW is truly an enormous heat source in a single location.

To be clear, it is irrelevant whether the energy for this data centres comes from solar, wind, nuclear or fossil fuels for our results. Our only assumption is the energy used is sourced from outside the immediate area and brought to the data centre for use.

I'm open to briefing IPC if required. The paper describing these simulations will liekly be submitted around the time this enquiry closes but given the scale of the potential impact on heat in Western Sydney I wanted to provide an early heads-up.

Dear Sir/Madame.
This is an amendment to my original submission:
I am the closest living resident to the proposed Data Centre SSD-92743706 at 53 Aldington Road which is less than 1km away.
I have resided here for almost 40 years and now find myself as soon to be the only living resident in the middle of a world class industrial precinct due to poor Government Planning.
So far I have endured huge set backs with surrounding developing industry, EG.dust , noise, vibration, diesel fumes power outages, water outages, restricted driveway access,road traffic etc.
Now I am anticipating all the above and more from the construction of the Data centre and permanent set backs on completion EG generator noise, diesel fumes, power fluctuations, water fluctuations and pressure loss ,also the huge amount of lithium iron batterie storage are of huge concern and especially electro magnetic waves which really have not been properly researched.
It will be to late when daming results are confirmed in the future as many tests of the past have shown in different areas EG affects recently shown on residents around Melbourne City Data Centre recently constructed.
Also word has it there may possibly be 1 or 2 more Data Centres planned in the Mamre Road precinct surrounding me, if that is true for me that would be catastrophic.
Currently i am canvassing the State Government for a fair deal on my land, should that succeed it will be problem solved, if not I should be entitled to a clean, quiet, safe haven for myself and my family.

The Data center will run 24 hours a day and demand immense power. The facility will use electricity which could provide electricity to tens of thousands of homes, putting a strain on an already strained resource. The use of the states water to cool the centre will also burden the States water supply. The strain on local power grids, will likely result in an increase to utility bills for residents, and generate constant industrial noise and harmful chemicals and gases to residents private homes. Large cooling fans, ventilation units, and backup diesel generators will create a loud, constant low-frequency hum that will disturb nearby neighborhoods. The local benefit to residents & the state, does not outweigh the risks and costs of building the centre. Notably, running the facility requires very few permanent local workers once it opens therefore not providing ongoing employment opportunities. The long-term tax exemptions the company is likely to secure, leaves the community with the huge infrastructural burden without receiving proportional tax revenue. We therefore object to the Mamre Rd Data centre proposal. We do not accept the data centre, in any size or capacity, presents any short or long term benefits to the community and the risks of the centre being constructed in Penrith outweigh any perceived benefits.

I, Lani Marie, strongly object to the proposed Mamre Road Data Centre Campus.
Australian land should not be sacrificed to the rapid expansion of private AI infrastructure, especially when projects of this scale place enormous demands on our electricity, water and environment. AirTrunk is owned by major institutional investors Blackstone and CPP Investments. These investment firms have portfolios with significant involvement in defence, nuclear and national-security industries, and CPP Investments has historically held investments in companies involved in nuclear-weapons programs.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! NO MORE DATA CENTRES!

There are numerous studies depicting the devastating loss of life to bees and other forms of wildlife as well as disruptions to all those in the surrounding area. No person should need to live in fear of the loss of biodiversity and watch as the earth we all share is pilfered solely to benefit the richest 1%. Can you imagine the elderly and the children and the toll that it would take on their lives to experience such extreme heat and noise pollution knowing that the government that is meant to protect us has sold us out in the name of profiting others? There can exist no empathy within anyone who supports this type of project and the disruption it will cause.

Data centres use so much water and power for little return - for a country that is prone to drought, constructing and maintaining data centres that churn through drinkable water is negligent. And the power usage of these centres is astronomical - if the only way to power these things means we use more fossil fuels, these are actively contributing towards climate change, in a time where we need to be doing more to fight climate change. We are a country that has felt, and will increasingly feel the impacts of climate change, with hotter and drier summers and more intense bush fires.
WE DO NOT NEED THIS.

This project is ill-advised for many reasons:
Power and water use. In a city where there has been water rationing in the past, and with climate change putting increased pressure on water resources , a huge development like this that uses billions of water yearly is madness. Some data centres are already using drinking water. Power needs are also exorbitant and will almost certainly require fossil fuel produced power.
Noise from data centres is constant and intrusive - there are two schools and residential houses near this proposal, which will be subjected to a constant low hum.
The scale of the proposal - reportedly possibly one of the largest - will overshadow everything in the vicinity. It is just too big for an ordinary Australian suburb.
Nobody has convincingly explained what benefit Australia will gain from these data centres. Australia and NSW in particular are rushing to approve them, with as yet no guardrails in place.
In summary the proposal is ill-conceived and completely unsuited to the site, and should not proceed.

I strongly object to the proposed development of the data centre on Mamre Road. First and foremost, there is already a data centre being developed within the region, on the same street, raising serious concerns about the cumulative impact of multiple large-scale developments on local infrastructure, the environment and the surrounding community. This area is already heavily burdened by industrial development, with numerous factories operating 24 hours a day, as well as the new 24-hour airport operating within the region. The proposed data centre, which includes 842 diesel backup generators and is expected to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, would add another significant source of noise, light, traffic and emissions to an area that is already under considerable pressure. Residents are already exposed to excessive industrial lighting, noise and activity, and adding another large-scale 24-hour facility risks further degrading the quality of life and surrounding environment. I am particularly concerned about the cumulative environmental and health impacts of diesel emissions, noise and light pollution, increased traffic and the additional demand placed on local infrastructure and resources. These impacts should not be considered in isolation. The combined effect of the existing factories, the new 24-hour airport, the data centre already being developed on Mamre Road and this proposed development must be properly assessed before any further approval is granted. The local community and environment should not continue to bear the consequences of unchecked industrial expansion.

I strongly object to the proposed data centre development on Mamre Road. The area is already increasingly becoming more industrial with noise pollution from construction feeling never ending. Residents should not be expected to simply absorb the cumulative impacts of one major development after another especially one as large as this data centre.

I am particularly concerned about the potential noise and air pollution associated with data centres of this scale, the surrounding areas of where this data centre is being built include schools and family homes im deeply disheartened of how fast development is being pushed without proper consideration for the community.

I hope the communities concerns are considered seriously, thank you.

Absolutely not, the noise pollution, the ambient heating of surrounding residences by 2-4 degrees and the extremely high energy usage of the facility will all negatively impact the well-being of nearby residents. Electricity usage should be conserved and usage minimised, not promoted by council and government. The widely purported jobs benefits is mostly a lie since such facilities are automated to reduce costs. I object absolutely.

Data centres are bio-weapons. These bio-weapons are a destruction to the community and the environment. The irreversible drain on finite, precious resources completely obliterates what Australia stands for.

This is happening right now in America - how are we not learning from what is happening over there? Why are we willingly allowing this to happen in Australia when we see exactly what is happening in America?
- The rivers and lakes are bone dry
- People do not have clean running water
- Bees are dying
- Animals are giving birth to still-borns
- People are getting sick from the noise and frequencies
- Electricity bills for households are through the roof
- Land that should be going to building more housing gets flipped to become a data centre

Australia is a drought country. Bringing this bio-weapon into Australia, that the government knows will put an insurmountable strain on water, is inconceivable.

People, animals and the environment are suffering due to the complete disregard. It is an absolute shame to see the Australian Government and NSW Government even consider this.
