The mine continues to show a strong commitment to proactive and meaningful community engagement.
For these reasons, I offer my full support for the extension of the mining operations.

This comes despite recent court rulings confirming that climate impacts must be considered in planning decisions, and despite the NSW Net Zero Commission warning that continued coal mine extensions are incompatible with NSW climate targets.

The coal mining industry around Mudgee is the backbone support for a lot of young families who rely on it for a good and secure income. Without it, so many families would have to leave town to find work which would also mean leaving their support networks. It’s hard enough as it is these days for young families to get by let alone removing the districts largest employing industry.
It is crucial for my family and many others that these mines are allowed to continue operations, it’s also crucial for the Mudgee community.

Additionally, Ulan Coal is known for ensuring a safe and reliable operation and its high focus for minimizing environmental impacts.
I strongly support the extension.

I strongly believe that Glencore will adhere to the highest possible standard in minimising any potential environmental impact associated with underground coal mining.
The negative opinion towards coal mining perpetrated within the media is misinformed and should not be the reason that this project is rejected. Rejection of this extension, and/or any further extension, will result in a major economic detriment.

Glencore, the operators of Ulan Mine have not provided information on methane emissions as a result of their mining activities.
Their monitoring process of cumulative effects to the local environment is flawed as it it will only be instigated once operations commence
Longwall mining which is the extraction process used by Glencore causes serious disturbance to groundwater flows and subsidence at surface level.
I repeat then my objection to this underground mining extension.

Importantly, the Mod 6 Project is designed to be environmentally responsible. It does not introduce any major changes to the current environmental and social impacts associated with mining activities. Instead, it requires only minor modifications to existing infrastructure, ensuring that we uphold our commitment to sustainable practices.

On top of the obvious benefits that Glencore and coal in general provides in relation to reliable and affordable energy, it also provides the local community with direct employment and supports local contractors, suppliers, hotels/accommodation, hospitality, retail, community funding & sponsorships.
Coal is a necessary commodity in the transition to green energy and the extension of an established and reputable operation that supports the local community makes more sense than seeking to open new mines elsewhere.
