I am writing as a community member to express my strong support for the proposed Newcastle Basketball HISC development. This project represents a vital step forward for our city, addressing the limitations of our current facilities while opening up new opportunities for families, young people, and the wider community.
The present stadium has served Newcastle well for many years, but it is now outdated and no longer able to meet the needs of our growing community. Courts are limited, facilities are stretched, and us children often miss out on participation simply because there is not enough space. A modern facility is essential if we want to provide safe, reliable, and inclusive opportunities for children to play sport year-round, regardless of weather conditions.
The proposed HISC will not only serve basketball but will also provide much-needed court space for futsal, pickleball, volleyball, netball, tennis, and other indoor sports. This diversity ensures that the centre will become a true community hub, a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to be active, healthy, and connected. The increased capacity will mean fewer children turned away and more young people engaged in positive, structured activities.
The benefits of this project go far beyond sport. It will support physical and mental health, encourage youth participation, and create pathways for local talent to progress at higher levels. Importantly, the design of the new HISC prioritises accessibility and inclusion, ensuring that everyone in Newcastle regardless of age, ability, or background, can take part. In a time when social connection is more important than ever, this centre will provide a safe, welcoming space where our community can grow stronger together.
In short, the HISC development is a once in a generation opportunity for Newcastle. It will replace outdated facilities with a modern, inclusive, and flexible community asset that will benefit families for decades to come. I wholeheartedly support this proposal and urge its approval.

I believe this project will bring significant and lasting benefits to our city. Newcastle has long needed a modern, dedicated facility to support the growing popularity of basketball and other indoor sports in our region.
A new stadium will provide essential infrastructure to support youth basketball programs, community clubs, and school competitions, keeping kids active and engaged. This project has the potential to attract regional, state, and even national events, bringing visitors, creating jobs, and boosting local businesses. With the women’s NBL1 team winning the championship in 2024, it’s about time our region had facilities that match our talent!

Whereas the need for a new facility for a basketball stadium in Newcastle/ Hunter region is without any doubt, a necessity for clubs and players, the selected location is an aberration.
Very strange decision to use an existing facility which allows cricket and soccer to be played every week but also by students of Lambton High School.
Aware the current site has been sold and snapped by a property developer keen to get this project off the ground, so the Newcastle basketball association is in a hurry to get the project going and will do everything to get it done on the only site which has been selected but a broad approach looking at the impact of the environment and the neighbourhood should be correctly done.
- Parking study should be (re)done as it is already a nightmare with young road closed from 9am (??) when the knights are playing and every street nearby getting abused with illegal parking, what will it be with 100’s more cars?
- flood impact: by building a stadium on that site, this area, already prone to flood issues, will most likely be worse …the existing storm water drain won’t cope
- local community impact: amazingly, majority of the people in favour of the project…..don’t leave in Lambton or Broadmeadow. So many people from Newcastle or Metewether happy to get a new facility not far from where they live ( very convenient) as long as it is not near their house…
I am strongly opposed to this project. This community has the feeling that nobody is listening to their concerns which are valid. The Hunter is a great place and deserve a new stadium but wrong spot.
Please listen to the people who are already dealing with the McDonald’s Jones stadium and the hockey facility. This green space is very valuable and important to our community.

I strongly support the proposed development of the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre.
The current facilities are not up to the standard expected for a major regional city. Having visited, played, and coached basketball in the existing venue for much of my life, I can say firsthand that the space is outdated and inadequate to meet the needs of the growing community.
Living close to the Queensland border, I regularly see the difference in facilities available across the state line. Centres on the Gold Coast and throughout Queensland are modern, well-designed, and able to cater to the high demand for court space. The same can be said for Victoria. Unfortunately, NSW lags behind, and our lack of comparable facilities places us at a disadvantage in accommodating our growing sport, hosting competitions, and providing pathways for athletes.
The demand for court space in NSW and the Hunter is only rising, and without investment, opportunities for players, coaches, officials, and the wider community will be limited. This development would not only improve access and participation but also help NSW stay competitive with neighbouring states.
I urge decision-makers to support the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre development and provide the community with the modern facilities it needs and deserves.
