I fully support the construction of the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre (HISC).
The current facility is beyond dated. It is very old and considering the price of club membership, it is far from the standard of other venues throughout the competition. The ceiling leaks consistently throughout the year and the number of games cancelled as a result is unacceptable. A new facility will bring a modern look and refresh the spirit of the Newcastle Basketball community.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing as a concerned and committed member of the Newcastle community to lend my full support to the development of the new HISC (Hunter Indoor Sports Centre) SSDA for basketball. As a parent of children involved in local sports, as well as a long-standing member of the broader Newcastle community, I cannot stress enough how important this project is for the future of our city.
The current basketball stadium is outdated and, quite frankly, no longer meets the needs of our growing community. Its facilities have served us well for many years, but they can no longer provide the safe, accessible, and year-round environment required for the level of participation we need. Whether rain, wind, or the intense summer heat, our kids deserve the opportunity to practice, train, and play in a facility that ensures their well-being and performance, no matter the weather.
The proposed HISC development promises to be a transformative community asset. Not only will it provide state-of-the-art facilities for basketball, but it will also support a wide range of indoor sports such as futsal, pickleball, volleyball, netball, and tennis. This is crucial for promoting a diverse sporting culture that appeals to all ages and interests. Expanding the range of sports available at one location will allow families to enjoy a variety of activities together, fostering greater community engagement and participation.
One of the most pressing issues we face currently is the lack of court capacity. So many children, including my own, have been turned away from basketball programs because the current facilities are overrun with demand. The new HISC will address this directly by increasing court availability, ensuring that no child is left behind due to insufficient infrastructure. This will have a profound impact on the development of young athletes, as they will have access to better resources, more training opportunities, and a space where they can build their skills and passion for the game.
Beyond sport, the HISC will help strengthen the social fabric of our community. It will be a space that brings people together, improving not only physical health but also social health. With more young people actively engaged in organized sports, we can expect to see improvements in mental well-being, decreased rates of youth disengagement, and greater inclusion of people from diverse backgrounds. Importantly, this facility will also be fully accessible, ensuring that people of all abilities are able to participate in and enjoy the benefits of sport.
In conclusion, the new HISC SSDA development represents more than just a sports facility. It is an investment in the future of Newcastle’s youth, health, and community spirit. I urge you to support this project and help create a legacy that will benefit generations to come.

I am writing to express my enthusiastic support for the Newcastle Basketball HISC SSDA development. As both a parent and an advocate for youth engagement in sport, I believe that the current state of our facilities limits the potential for young athletes in our community to thrive. The need for an upgraded, modern sports centre is undeniable, and I strongly believe that the new HISC will provide vital opportunities for children, families, and the wider Newcastle community.
The existing basketball stadium is aging and increasingly unable to meet the growing demand for indoor sporting spaces. We need a new, multipurpose facility that offers year-round access for a wide range of sports, including basketball, futsal, volleyball, pickleball, netball, and tennis. This facility will provide our young people with the resources they need to stay active and engaged, especially during the colder months when outdoor sports are often disrupted by bad weather.
The new HISC will also address a critical shortage of available courts. Every year, countless children are turned away from sports programs because of overcrowded or insufficient facilities. This new development will significantly increase court capacity, ensuring that no child is left out due to lack of space. More courts mean more opportunities for young athletes to engage in training, competition, and development, which is essential to nurturing talent and fostering a love for sport.
Beyond sport, the HISC will have a profound social impact on the Newcastle community. Engaging in sports has been shown to improve physical health, promote positive mental well-being, and build stronger, more resilient communities. By investing in this facility, we are not just supporting young athletes; we are creating a space that encourages teamwork, personal development, and inclusion. The HISC will serve as a focal point for youth engagement, offering a safe and supportive environment where young people can build life skills, form friendships, and stay connected to their community.
In conclusion, the Newcastle Basketball HISC SSDA is an exciting development that promises to bring a host of benefits to our city, particularly for our young people. I urge you to support this initiative and recognize the lasting positive impact it will have on the health, well-being, and social cohesion of our community.

I’m 13 years old, and basketball has been part of my life since I was 6. I started in mini hoops, moved into club competitions, and now play representative basketball. I’ve spent so many hours training, competing, and learning important life lessons from the sport, and I want other kids to have the same chance I have had.

At the moment, our stadium is too old and doesn’t meet the needs of the community. It can’t handle the number of children who want to play, and sometimes people are turned away because there simply isn’t space. With the new Hunter Indoor Sports Centre, we will finally have enough courts to make sure no child misses out.

Basketball is a sport that never stops – it’s played all year round, indoors, no matter the weather. Having a new centre means families won’t have to worry about heat waves or rain cancelling games. It will also open the doors to other sports like futsal, volleyball, pickleball, tennis, and netball, creating a home for so many active people in Newcastle.

This project is more than just a building. It’s about keeping kids engaged, improving health and fitness, making sport accessible to everyone, and giving players the chance to develop pathways to higher levels. The social connections formed through sport are powerful, and a new centre will make our community stronger and closer.

I fully support the Newcastle Basketball HISC SSDA development and hope it goes ahead, because it will mean a brighter sporting future for Newcastle.

As a resident living on Monash Road I completely object to the basketball stadium being built on these ovals. Firstly, safety of the community. Someone, most likely a child will be hit by a car. The chaotic congestion that will be caused by this build will cause harm to the community. Having the entrance on Turton Road is also concerning, a high traffic area that is already congestion during the day will only cause more accidents that occur on this road. As a former emergency nurse I have seen multiple traumas in my time, if this was so go ahead lives will be at risk. Secondly, we live in a flood plane area. I heard that one young man apart of this project said that the water will just “flow into the creek” aka the drain. When asked where will the water go their response was “oh the creek drains quickly”. This drain floods quickly and fast. In an event of torrential rain which has occurred multiple times this year, the drain will overflow nearly to the road. What is the plan if hundreds of people are crossing this drain to play sport and they fell in? They’d be dead and drowned very quickly. Thirdly, has the young soccer teams been considered in all this. Or the people who play cricket in summer? What about the high school kids? Keeping them in a classroom with no where to run for 8 hours a day at school is only going to cause mental health issues. You’re taking away peoples rights to socialise, connect, play, enjoy green space and enjoy life. After living in this street for 10 years there’s not a day that goes by where there’s noone on the oval, enjoying the sunshine and playing with their mates.
I’m heavily disappointed and frustrated at the lack of communication we’ve had as a community and totally blind sided to this idea. I’m also heartbroken to think that the government and council think this is the space for such a build. Lives are at risk, people will be injured, our houses are at risk of flooding (again) and the mental health of our children will be affected. You’re not only taking away our green space, but you’re taking away our backyard. Find another space, do it properly.
