It important for us to provide options for young people to engage in healthy activities and have a strong sense of community and belonging. Basketball has a strong following but is not able to grow because of the limited capacity of the facilities

Indoor court-based sport continues to grow in Australia and across regional NSW. Basketball alone is now the second highest team participation sport in the country. Quality facilities and court availability have been flagged for some time by governing body Basketball NSW in their Facilities Strategy, so the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre development supports that, and will provide the region with a high quality sporting facility that could be enjoyed by thousands of people each year, not just basketballers.

My grandchildren and children have played basketball all over the state and Australia for over 30 years. The current Basketball facilities in Newcastle are by far the worst we have encountered. This needs to change.

The proposed Hunter Indoor Sports Centre (HISC) represents a once in a generation opportunity to replace Newcastle’s ageing 55-year-old basketball stadium and meet growing demand for indoor sports, health, and community facilities across the Hunter. It will support basketball and multiple other sports, promote inclusion and wellbeing, attract regional and national events, and align with the Broadmeadow Place Strategy while boosting the local economy. While risks such as flooding, traffic, green space loss, financial sustainability, and community concerns have been identified, these are manageable through enforceable controls including flood mitigation, traffic and event management, alternative facilities, diversified funding, and active community engagement. With these safeguards, the benefits strongly outweigh the risks, making HISC a vital and sustainable investment in Newcastle’s sporting history, its people, and its future.

I would strongly like to object to this proposal being built at the suggested location.
I do not disagree that there is a need for a new Basketball Stadium, however, the location is not the right one.
Amongst my main concerns, the flood risk is definitely first and foremost. When, and I mean WHEN that occurs, the damage to the surrounding properties will be horrendous! The area already floods easily and that’s a fact that has so far been ignored by the developers. How is that fair to the surrounding residents??
The effect on the roads/traffic is also a huge concern. Traffic is already HELL when the Knights are playing! The surrounding roads are severely effected as is - without the added traffic that will occur with the stadium.
The monumental effect on Lambton High and its students borders on criminal. To take away the fields, the greenery, the nature, the natural light - despite the promises that the students can use the INDOOR stadium - that’s just sad, unwarranted, uncaring and completely wrong in every way.
If this proposal goes ahead, it will be one of the biggest injustices I’ve been aware of.
So many actual facts have been presented by so many people, proving and showing reasons why this must not go ahead.
I pray that the correct, safe and logical decision is made - save Lambton ovals!!
Find somewhere else by all means - not Lambton!
