Springvale Coal Mine Extension

I question whether the 11.44 ha of cleared land can be avoided. I wonder when we're going to stop removing habitat. It like saying that 5 adults can live in a 4x4 meter cubical for the rest of their life, sure they can but they won't necessarily do well and the same can be said about our forests, they need room.

My submission on the Springvale Mine Extension Project requests that the project be rejected for the reasons which follow:

- Important swamps, pagodas, and stream environments in this significant part of the Gardens of Stone region must not be damaged by longwall coal mining but instead protected in a state conservation area.

- The Springvale and the adjoining Angus Place mine extension proposals must be subject to a Planning Assessment Commission review with concurrent Public Hearings.

- Centennial Coal must not be allowed to simply replicate the damage it has already caused to nationally threatened upland swamps on the Newnes Plateau for which it was required by the Commonwealth Government to pay $1.45 million in reparations.

- The sandstone rock supporting the 41 nationally endangered swamps, including the 11 shrub swamps affected by the proposal must not be fractured.

- The project threatens the Coxs River and the water supply of towns and cities downstream of it. Should the project be granted approval, which I argue that it shouldn't, the proposed discharge of up to 43.8megalitres/day eco-toxic mine effluent must be treated by reverse osmosis technology to remove all metals and salts before discharge to the Coxs River.

- The scenic western edge of the Newnes Plateau must be protected from further scarring by new roads, pipeline and electricity easements.

- Carne Creek is currently in a pristine state, and its waters that flow through the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area are of the highest standard. This creek must not run bright orange, just like the Wolgan River after Centennial Coal wrecked it.

- Should this project unfortunately be granted approval, please require Centennial to revise this proposal to improve environmental outcomes. Carne and Bungleboori Creeks, pagodas, cliffs and the many nationally endangered swamps must not be damaged.

There are important swamps, pagodas, and stream environments in this part of the Gardens of Stone, which are significant and must not be damaged by long-wall coal mining. Indeed, they need to be protected as a state conservation area.

It's for this reason that I would like to see the Springvale and the adjoining Angus Place mine extension proposals to be subject to a Planning Assessment Commission review with concurrent Public Hearings.

The Commonwealth Department of the Environment has previously found that Centennial Coal's long wall coal mining operations on the Newnes Plateau caused significant impact on the endangered Temperate highland peat swamps on sandstone ecological community.
At the very least, any development consent must be subject to periodic third party reviews to ensure that adjoining conservation areas are not adversely affected.

This extension is going to be a vital part of the future of the local district with the closure of the Wallerawang power station for an undisclosed period and employment opportunity's becoming harder to obtain and keep in the current employment climate.

Hanging swamps and land water are vital to the health of the landscape which surrounds our great cities. Long wall mining represents a pollution threat, a subsidence threat and most insidiously a water threat to the immediate land around the proposed despoiling project.

The age of coal mines is drawing to a close. The failure to address innovative solutions for the future is only prolonged by the poorly planned and poorly thought out coal model. The spills and unrectifiable impact that such submissions and exploitations have only serve to lay waste to landscape and aquifers which should act as a naturally balanced filter and store for water and biodiversity.

Any jobs that come from such projects are false economies based on short term gains which damage future prospects for multiple generations.

This land and all land east of these proposals should be free of such vexatious claims on our health and quality of life.

Springvale Colliery has a good mining record in our local area with minimal impact to both the local people and the environment.
Springvale employs a local workforce which in turn helps our local communities by injecting money into shops for goods and services in turn creating jobs for other members of our community.
