I have been living and working in Mudgee for the past 18 years and run a small business, and I can tell you first hand how much of a positive impact Wilpinjong Coal Mine has had on Mudgee, they employ many good people and they are what I consider to be good corporate citizens. The expansion and extension will continue to help the community grow and thrive in these testing times.

I am writing as a local resident of Mudgee to express my strong support for the proposed extension of the Wilpinjong. This mine is not only a significant employer in our community but also a critical contributor to the economic stability and social well-being of many families, including my own.
The Wilpinjong Mine has been a cornerstone of our local economy for years, providing essential jobs and supporting local businesses. Many residents, myself included, depend on the mine directly or indirectly for our livelihoods. The extension of the mine’s operation would ensure continued employment opportunities and allow the community to thrive, avoiding economic hardship that might arise if the mine were to close prematurely.
Beyond employment, the mine contributes to community development through infrastructure support, sponsorship of local events, and investment in social programs that benefit residents of all ages. The economic ripple effect of the mine supports schools, healthcare, and small businesses, creating a vibrant and resilient community.
I understand there are environmental considerations related to mining activities, and I believe with modern technologies and responsible management, it is possible to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. The continuation of the mine’s operations will allow time for further investment in sustainable practices and rehabilitation efforts, ensuring the long-term health of our land and community.
For these reasons, I respectfully urge the relevant authorities to approve the extension of the Wilpinjong Mine. Supporting this extension supports the livelihood of many families and the ongoing prosperity of our community.
Thank you for considering my submission.

I support this project because Wilpinjong is one of the country’s lowest emitting coal mines and supports more than 160 community organisations through $1.2 million in grants. The modification will also help protect the culturally significant Indigenous sites at the Rocky Hill complex and preserve the Cumbo Creek corridor.

I strongly support the extension of the Wilpinjong Mine. As a proud employee of Peabody, I work closely with many colleagues at the mine who live in Mudgee and have been active contributors to the local community for many years.
In addition, I work closely with a range of regional service providers who deliver critical support to Wilpinjong, including rail haulage operators, the Australian Rail Track Corporation, port services, and laboratory analysis providers across New South Wales. The mine’s continued operation underpins not only local employment but also the sustainability of these businesses and the many jobs they create in the region.
Approval of the extension would ensure ongoing support for these organisations and the broader network of valuable service providers that contribute to the region’s economic strength and community wellbeing.

Wilpinjong Coal Mine generates a lot of opportunity and wealth for Australians, particularly, those within the local area. I believe mining coal is far more cost effective and less environmentally damaging than renewables. To see the pit 8 extension not go ahead would be a horrible shame and wasted opportunity.

I am writing to express my full support for the proposed modification to the Wilpinjong Mine, which will enable operations to continue until 2033. This project represents a critical investment in both the local region and the broader New South Wales economy, while reflecting Peabody’s continued commitment to responsible mining and sustainable community development.
The Wilpinjong operation has long been a cornerstone of employment and economic stability in the Mudgee region, supporting more than 700 direct jobs and contributing over half a billion dollars annually to the state’s economy. The proposed extension will sustain these opportunities and continue to generate vital revenue streams for regional businesses, contractors, and community services.
Importantly, the project supplies around 25% of New South Wales’ coal for power generation, playing a key role in maintaining reliable energy supply as the state transitions toward a balanced energy future.
Peabody has demonstrated consistent leadership in environmental management, safety, and community engagement. Wilpinjong is recognised as one of the lowest-emitting coal mines in Australia, with ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency and minimise its environmental footprint. The mine has invested more than $1.2 million in community grants, supporting over 160 local organisations, and continues to prioritise meaningful relationships with Traditional Owners and local stakeholders.
The modification proposal includes measures to protect culturally significant Indigenous sites at the Rocky Hill complex and preserve the Cumbo Creek corridor, ensuring that environmental and cultural values are safeguarded alongside economic and social benefits.
In my view, this project represents a balanced and responsible approach to resource development — one that sustains employment, strengthens the economy, and respects the environment and community in which it operates.
I strongly support the approval of the Wilpinjong Mine modification to allow continued operation through to 2033.

I believe this project is great for the community of Wilpinjong, Mudgee, Gulgong and surrounding communities. The number of employees that Wilpinjong supports alone is enough for this proposal to have a significant positive impact on the region if the mine life is extended. The mine also donates to multiple organisations locally and commits to rehabilitation of the the mine.

As a resident of our rural community and a current employee of the mine, I wish to express my strong support for the proposed coal expansion project.
The mine has been a cornerstone of our local economy for many years, providing stable employment, training opportunities, and vital financial support to families like mine. The proposed expansion will not only secure ongoing jobs but also create additional employment opportunities for local workers and businesses that depend on the mine’s operation.
For many of us, the mine is more than a workplace—it’s what allows us to raise our families here, contribute to local schools, and support small businesses in the region. Continued investment in responsible mining practices ensures that economic growth can coexist with environmental management and community wellbeing.
I urge the decision-makers to approve this expansion, as it represents a sustainable future for our town and the hardworking people who call it home.
Sincerely,
Paul Campbell

I strongly support the modification of Wilpinjong Mine and I outline my reasons why below.
Wilpinjong is a safe and responsibly operated mine with an excellent safety record and a strong commitment to the wellbeing of its workforce. The mine adheres to the strict environmental regulations set by the New South Wales Government and it is far better to mine coal here - under rigorous environmental oversight - than to import it from countries with less stringent environmental standards.
NSW coal is of exceptionally high quality compared to international standards. As we continue to rely on coal for our energy needs in the foreseeable future, it makes sense to use coal that is more efficient and produces more energy with fewer emissions.
We are currently facing an energy crisis, with electricity prices soaring. Reliable baseload power is essential as we transition to other forms of energy. Wilpinjong provides approximately 25% of the coal used for electricity generation in NSW, making it a critical part of our energy infrastructure.
The mine also supports around 700 direct jobs. That’s 700 families relying on this operation - an enormous impact for a regional community like Mudgee. Beyond direct employment, over 500 suppliers benefit from Wilpinjong, supporting many indirect jobs and contributing approximately $400 million annually to the local and regional economy.
The mine’s management has demonstrated responsibility and respect for cultural heritage. They have committed to avoiding culturally significant sites during any expansion and are working in partnership with Traditional Owners. Additionally, they are avoiding the Cumbo Creek corridor.
Wilpinjong also gives back to the community, providing over $1 million in grants to more than 160 local organisations. These contributions support grassroots initiatives that make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable community members. For example, Wilpinjong has helped fund and construct a horse-riding hub for people with disabilities in Mudgee.
All mining approvals must be assessed against the technical ability of the operator to manage environmental impacts. Wilpinjong has consistently demonstrated its capacity to meet these standards. Approving this mine ensures that the Mudgee region continues to host a responsible operation that not only registers some of the lowest emissions for a coal mine operations in terms of mining intensity but also delivers significant economic and social benefits.

Peabody Wilpinjong mine has been a part of the Mudgee community for @18 years. They support our community and NSW immensely by means of employment opportunities, financial growth, support for local businesses, developing the community by sponsorship of numerous charities, community, and sporting events, are a major contributor in increasing our health services with the Doctors for Mudgee campaign, environmental & heritage protection. This along with the financial injection from coal mining into the region of more than $6 billion, making mining the biggest industry with the largest economic output, and the largest employer of local residents in the region. I think it is very safe to say that Mudgee would not be thriving like it is without mining and Wilpinjong mine. I love this town and the majority of visitors to the region that I have spoken with didn't even realise we have mines, which shows this is not a typical mining town and the mines are very proud it is not seen that way. I can only imagine what would happen to it if the mining was to disappear. The decline in financial support, the departure of families, and impact to small business in the town and the community would be substantial. It definitely would not be the town it is today.
