The project will ensure job opportunities continue to be created in the region. The operation will continue to stimulate the local economy with >$0.5b in direct economic contribution to NSW and $96m in wages to employees. Wilpinjong also currently provides 25% of NSW coal-generated power supply. Comparatively, Wilpinjong is one of the lowest-emitting coal mines in Australia and is positioned to support the energy transition by providing reliable and affordable energy during the transition.

I write in support of the proposed Pit 8 Extension at the Wilpinjong Coal Mine. In my view, the extension offers significant benefits—economic, social, and strategic—that merit approval, provided that robust mitigation and monitoring are enforced.

To whom it may concern,

I am a resident of NSW. I care deeply about the health of our environment and the wellbeing of the communities that depend on it. Climate change isn’t an abstract issue for me. It affects the safety of our summers, the reliability of our food and water, and the future we will leave to the next generation.

Expanding the Wilpinjong Coal Mine would take us in the wrong direction. The project would increase greenhouse gas emissions at a time when we urgently need to reduce them, especially after agreeing to a higher target for the Paris Agreement. It risks further damaging local ecosystems, threatening native wildlife and biodiversity that are already under pressure from drought and habitat loss. The expansion could also impact the health and livelihoods of nearby communities through dust, noise, and water contamination. Moreover, the area holds deep cultural significance for Aboriginal peoples, whose heritage and connection to Country must be respected and protected, and not undermined by further industrial activity.

I therefore strongly urge the decision makers not to approve the expansion of the Wilpinjong Coal Mine. We should be investing in renewable energy and sustainable jobs, not expanding coal production in the middle of a climate crisis.

Thank you for considering my submission.

Sincerely,
A concerned state resident
