Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)

On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex.  A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site.  An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

My boyfriend works at MTW mine.

If he lost his job we would have to move to a different area to find work.

I support this extension application as a local eresident.I have 3 teenage children whom are relying on a strong local economy to allow them employment. The current downturn in the mining industry has already created a local recession, making jobs very scarce.A further downturn from the shortened life of MTW will only further job shortfalls in our area.

I am a land owner, father of four young children, tax payer, rate payer and a proud member of the community.
I fully support the continuation of Mt Thorley and Warkworth Coal Operations.
Ive been Living in Maitland since 1992 and want to continue to live here until retirement, that is considering that my newly found carrer as a operater.
If this continution does not go ahead not only will myself and 1300 plus people loss their jobs in the hunter region it will aslo affect the whole community, from doctors looking after sick children to real estate prices, schools, local shops, dentist, local goverment, basically anyone who has anything to do with anyone empolyed at Mt Thorley Warkworth.
In affect if the continuation does not go ahead you will be condeming the entire Hunter region and on an even larger scale Austraila.
It has to go head

I believe the contiuation of the MTW is essential for the survival of local business not only in upper hunter communities (Singleton, Branxton, Muswellbrook) but also Maitland Port Stephens and Newcastle businesses.
We have already seen and heard and seen busineses both small and large, from Westrac scaling down to small courier companies closing their doors all struggling due to this.
I believe there needs to be a common sense approach, I compare the situation to wanting to dig a hole in your own back yard but not being able to dig to your back fence even though you have owned the land since the house was built.
This mine also provides millions of dollars to these local areas.
I struggle to understand the reasoning behind the decision.
I understand the mine does have an environmental impact, so do plenty of other industries.
There has already been too many job lost!
No more please!
I myself with my own small family as well as my 1300 workmates depend on this to survive.

I am a retired mineworker and was born in Singleton in 1934. I fully support the application for the extension of MTW. i have seen Singleton flourish over the decades primarily as a result of the mining industry and the flow on effect it has had on local business and the local economy. I have also seen the devastating impact a downturn in the industry can have. As mining is the primary industry in the region and MTW being one of the largest employers of miners, we must allow it to continue, thus approval of the proposed extension is imperative to local jobs, businesses and community

I support the continuation of Mount Thorley Warkworth. It would have a detrimental affect on society and lifestyle if it were to close down. Our family relies on this operation to continue as my husband works there.it would be a disaster for him to lose his job at MTO.

I have been employed at mount thorley warkworth now for three years. My family of five ( My partner, a four year old and twins aged two and myself) are currently living in Branxton. I am the sole incomer earner for my family and rely on Mount thorley warkworth to provide for them. I am all for the Extension being approved as i believe this can have a great spin off on the comunity, eg goods and services right through the region, which has to be a positive. take this away and i think there could be big consequences for the comunity, job losses ,bussiness going under, people leaving the area would be a great loss for the hunter region.
My family rely very much on the extension being approved. I would like to continue my minning ccareer right here where i first started it and would like to continue in to the future.

I am supporting the extention of the mine as a worker on site. I have moved to the area and have bought a house to provide for my family within the hunter valley, i am new to mining but want to have a long future within the mining industry in the hunter valley. I am the sole provider for my family and this job is vital to my family. Im not sure what i will do without this job. The site provides money to our community for sporting fields and a variety of community facilities. i believe the mining industry is vital to the hunter valley and australia.
