Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)
On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex. A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site. An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

My son works at the mine and is waiting for the approoval to go through so that he can purchase a house and settle down in the hunter area.
If the approval does not go though i would not be able to support him as i am retired from the workforce and do not have enough income to support both of us, and in this current job climate it would be very hard for him to come across work anytime soon.
If the aprooval does not go through it would be a blow to the region as 1300 employees would loose there jobs and many supportinbg companies would close too due to the lack of work in the industry at the moment .
In closing i think it it vitalk for the Hunter region and for NSW to approve the expasion for the future of the areas

In closing id just like to say please approve to expansion as the local area is relying on the mine to keep it going as i and my fellow workers are too.

-1300 Workers are dependent on Mount Thorley Warkworth for their income to support themselves and their Families, which in turn supports local business and local community groups. If the extension is denied, it will be a significant blow to the Hunter Valley workforce and Economy, as the site will reduce its sustainability and its workforce.
-Confidence from Business Investors and Companies in the region will be reduced if the extension is denied, as the International Companies like Rio Tinto Coal and Allied will start to remove their presence in the region.
-The Fossil Fuel industries are in their twilight decades with the finate resources available and the effect on the environment in the long term, however, as previously mentioned many workers rely on these Industries along with the wider community. To ensure a smooth transition from a Fossil Fueled World to a Energy Sustainable Planet via Clean Energy Technology, the move has to be gradual for the population to maintain living standards and employment as the Technology and Infrastructure is implemented in the coming decades. The Mount Thorley Warkworth Site would be a sustainable candidate to allow this smooth transition.
Thankyou for your time and consideration.
