Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)

On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex.  A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site.  An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

I believe that the extension for MTW will benefit the wider community through employment and utilisation of local business suppliers.

I think the Mount Thorley continuation should be given full approval due to the economic benefits that it would bring to people in the hunter and surrounding areas. I have only been working at MTW for 2 months now through Skilled Group. I love my new career and work industry. Not only would this continuation provide ongoing work for myself and fellow workmates but the hundreds of contractors who rely on MTW as a means of income. I want my chance to reach my full potential in my new career and not have the worry that I may not even finish my qualification if the continuations and extensions are not approved. This industry brings money to the hunter and Australia and needs to continue so the Australian economy can continue to flourish.

Mines in the Hunter Valley have as much a right to operate as other business or landuses. MTW has the responsibility of looking after and provide for its employees within the limits of a feasibile business. I also believe that MTW should operate in a sustainable manner and that the appropriate government depart should approve the development. Considering the multiplier effect, MTW's contribution to the regional economy is significant and needs careful consideration especialy in current state of the economy.

I have lived in the hunter valley for 14 years, and worked at Mt Thorley Warkworth for the past 11yrs. I support the submission as my employment pays for my livelihood, and with the industry in a downturn it would be very hard to gain employment elsewhere if I were to lose my job.

I currently work at MTW and have done so for approx. 6 years.

Without approval of the expansions I face a very uncertain future. The mine needs the expansion to remain viable, without it I want have a job, it is that simple.

I have a family living in the lower hunter, they go to school, my wife works in the local area and we spend the majority of our earnings at local business.

If I were to become unemployed I would be forced to move interstate. Their are no mining jobs in the hunter valley to go too, so I would be forced to chase jobs outside of NSW.

The expansion asked for by Rio Tinto is not unreasonable. I agree that the impact felt by the mines expansion should take into account the Bulga community. But with correct management and consent conditions the concerns to the Bulga community can be managed.

Their can be a win/win situation for both parties.

The Mt. Thorley Continuation In conjunction with the Warkworth Continuation is essential to future of not only 1300 direct jobs, but countless other jobs within the region. The economic and social impacts if these two projects do not proceed will be felt around the State and beyond.

I'm currently employed at MTW if the consent does not go through then jobs will be lost, mine will go as I'm a support role. I live in Singleton with my family, my eldest daughter goes to school here, my baby girl attends many infant programs with my wife who is a stay at home Mum. We are a single income family and shop locally. If I loose my job i will have to move out of the area to get work.

i strongly support the mine, as mining our natural resources means the future of Australia, NSW, Hunter Valley, all the mining towns and all the family's who rely on the income sourced directly or indirectly from the mines.
I feel that this resource far out weighs any environmental issue's which are minor as it is old farm land that is being mined and also the fact that the mine have tight environmental restriction in placed which are set and monitored by the government. The local environment is better off from a controlled mining Technics than uncontrolled farming Technics.

The mount thorley project is important to nsw and the hunter. Already we are feeling the sting of mining downturns and a reduction of employment, and as the hunter community, it is hard to sustain further losses. I support mount thorley

Mount thorley expansion is important to the hunter and mining in nsw. It is an emotional subject, bu I firmly believe that the mine expansion can coexist with the local community if it is managed in a responsible manner

I totally support the approval of the planned lease for Mt Thorley Warkworth. I am married with two children under three. My wife and I are both employees at Mt Thorley Warkworth and our future is directly dependent on the mine's extension being approved.
As first home owner's the impact of the mine's closure will be disastrous to us. We will be forced to sell at a massive loss, our children will need to be withdrawn from day care and we will need to relocate to try and find employment opportunities elsewhere - that won't be easy. Employment opportunities in the Hunter Valley will be further reduced due to the flow on effects of Mt Thorley Warkworth's closure.
In an already struggling coal industry it is appalling that this major Hunter Valley employer is under threat of closure due to extension difficulties. It is absolutely imperative that Mt Thorley Warkworth be awarded its extension, for without it the impacts on our own lives and the communities that depend on the mine will be catastrophic.
The impacts of Mt Thorley Warkworth's closure will far surpass that of it's 1300 employees. In my opinion the flow on effects are way greater than we can predict, it sickens me think of an actual number. Two years ago the mine was forced to make cost cuts, that in itself had a huge impact on the community and the mine was still operational. I hate to think what will become of the community if the whole mine was to close. It will be a disaster.
We love living in the Hunter Valley for its tranquillity, entertainment, education, accessibility and opportunity. The Mt Thorley Warkworth mine allows us to enjoy what the Hunter Valley offers and to give back to it, take the mine away from us and both ourselves and the Hunter Valley will suffer greatly - guaranteed!!
Lets support the planning and plan for a brighter future for all, even the complainers.
