Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)
On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex. A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site. An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

Without approval of the expansions I face a very uncertain future. The mine needs the expansion to remain viable, without it I want have a job, it is that simple.
I have a family living in the lower hunter, they go to school, my wife works in the local area and we spend the majority of our earnings at local business.
If I were to become unemployed I would be forced to move interstate. Their are no mining jobs in the hunter valley to go too, so I would be forced to chase jobs outside of NSW.
The expansion asked for by Rio Tinto is not unreasonable. I agree that the impact felt by the mines expansion should take into account the Bulga community. But with correct management and consent conditions the concerns to the Bulga community can be managed.
Their can be a win/win situation for both parties.

I feel that this resource far out weighs any environmental issue's which are minor as it is old farm land that is being mined and also the fact that the mine have tight environmental restriction in placed which are set and monitored by the government. The local environment is better off from a controlled mining Technics than uncontrolled farming Technics.

As first home owner's the impact of the mine's closure will be disastrous to us. We will be forced to sell at a massive loss, our children will need to be withdrawn from day care and we will need to relocate to try and find employment opportunities elsewhere - that won't be easy. Employment opportunities in the Hunter Valley will be further reduced due to the flow on effects of Mt Thorley Warkworth's closure.
In an already struggling coal industry it is appalling that this major Hunter Valley employer is under threat of closure due to extension difficulties. It is absolutely imperative that Mt Thorley Warkworth be awarded its extension, for without it the impacts on our own lives and the communities that depend on the mine will be catastrophic.
The impacts of Mt Thorley Warkworth's closure will far surpass that of it's 1300 employees. In my opinion the flow on effects are way greater than we can predict, it sickens me think of an actual number. Two years ago the mine was forced to make cost cuts, that in itself had a huge impact on the community and the mine was still operational. I hate to think what will become of the community if the whole mine was to close. It will be a disaster.
We love living in the Hunter Valley for its tranquillity, entertainment, education, accessibility and opportunity. The Mt Thorley Warkworth mine allows us to enjoy what the Hunter Valley offers and to give back to it, take the mine away from us and both ourselves and the Hunter Valley will suffer greatly - guaranteed!!
Lets support the planning and plan for a brighter future for all, even the complainers.
