Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)

On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex.  A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site.  An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

i have been employed in the mining industry for 41 years in both underground and open cut and have seen the ups and down that go hand in hand with the industry.as for those employed at mtw the extension will provide them with a great future and also ensure the continuation of many mining related companies within the community

the longevity of mtw that the extension if granted would provide enormous stability to not only the individuals some 1300 workers that are employed directly by rio tinto but also the wider community. every job that i have had since i left school in 1999 has had something to do with the mining industry and without these mines many jobs would be lost not only those who are employed by the mines it would be felt right across the community

Im all forward for the extension to be approved as Australia will depend on the coal industry in the near future we need safe and secure jobs for us workers and our children The Mounthorly Warkworth extension should be approved as 1300 jobs hang in the balance of this mine site . the effect on the sourounding communitys will be enormous .it will not nly effect the towns in the area but it will affect the Australian aconomy as more mines get shut down australians minerals will go to waste
in the future coming. RIO

I am a local here in Singleton for many years and I would like to support the extention and continuation of Mount Thorley Warkworth. At present if you travel around our town you will find business which have been in our town for many years are now closing down eg: Betta Electricial - due to job losses around the mining industries our small business can not survive. I ask you to take in to consideration that this approval will effect many people. Dont let our town die. Help us to support the mining industries, small business, school etc.

I fully support the application to expand and continue mining at MTW. As a local to Singleton and with family working at MTW and other mines in the area i know how important this application is for the jobs of all those employed at MTW and and for the economy of the area, a huge number of businesses rely on MTW and the mining industry in general for work. We are already seeing the impact of the mining downturn in Singleton with businesses closing, jobs lost, investment in housing slowing etc.
Thank You.

As a resident of Singleton and employee of Coal and Allied I strongly support the application. Having worked in various mining operations across Australia I can vouch that there are few that can match the level of environmental management employed at MTW. The entire leadership team is acutely aware of the need to achieve the high standards set for environmental compliance in order to run a sustainable business and is committed to industry leading standards. There are many examples of leading practice including noise monitoring and management systems, dust and blast fume management, rehabilitation quality and cultural heritage management. This is not to say that this mine is without its impacts. By their nature all mines have impacts and for MTW these are well known and documented and demonstrated to be within acceptable limits. I implore the Department and the Planning Assessment Commission to assess the impacts and mitigation commitments objectively. It's my opinion that an objective assessment can only conclude that the positive outcomes from this project significantly outweigh the negative impacts for the Singleton shire and the NSW population more generally. Without the approval the company will in all likelihood start planning for closure. For a mine that has operated for more than 30 years, with a large resource to continue mining for at least another 30, a premature closure driven by a subjective assessment would be a devastating and regrettable outcome.

I have been in the industry for 31 years and have two son in laws and a daughter in the mining industry. I would like to see continued employment at MTW other wise families will have to leave the area to seek further employment. I support the extension at MTW and the continued employment of not only the 1300 employed at MTW but also the other small businesses and contractors within the hunter area.

The Hunter Valley needs mining to survive. There are already many unemployed due to the current downturn and the effects of this can be seen in Singleton and Muswellbrook.
Without the continuation of mining in this area the effect would be enormous.

The Mount Thorley approval is just as important as the Warkworth approval. I don't work in the mining industry, but it supports my family through my husband's job. I have worked for over 20 years in the health industry.
It's not just about mine workers. If my family has to leave the Hunter for work, there will also be one less health worker in the Hunter.
