Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)
On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex. A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site. An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

I have concerns about the communities viability & the sound socioeconomic society the we have today in the Hunter area should the extension not be approved.
I believe that it would contribute to family break ups, increased crime rate and many more acts of desperation that will burden the entire NSW communities viability especially in the current economical downturn that we currently face.
Thank you for time

Over the 4 years at MTW i have seen first hand how much importance is placed on being a good neighbour to the surrounding communities whether it be threw dust or threw noise the mine always pulls up production to get things under control.

For the following reasons:
-The Operation is a crucial Employer in the area.
-MTW has hundreds of local suppliers supporting Australian local jobs.
-The revenue is an important source of income for our local, state and federal government.
-The amount of people negatively affected is negligible compared to the benefits.

The Mount Thorley project proposes no additional mining footprint, and includes for the final void to be backfilled.
Approval of the Mt Thorley project is critical to the integrated Mt Thorley Warkworth development, which I also support.

Further there are many jobs within Rio Tinto Coal Australia that provide support services to MTW in addition to the 1,300 jobs. As MTW is one of five mines managed by RTCA, there are many jobs in head office of Brisbane that also depend on MTW.
A thorough EIS has been undertaken to identify and mitigate potential impacts. The economic benefits of the resource are significant. The economic benefits of the mine are spread widely throughout the Hunter and Australia. The slow down an ultimate closure of this resource would result in widespread impact to the Hunter Valley and RTCA (both in the Hunter Valley and Brisbane).

Failure to secure the modification will likely see my job (as well as 1300 others) redundant, and as such will force me to relocate from the Hunter Valley in search of alternative employment.
The prospect of future, stable employment would allow my family to plan a permanent life in the Hunter Valley
