Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)
On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex. A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site. An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

There is, and will remain, ample buffer between the mine and Bulga if the extension was to take place. Also the rehab work that will be done once mining has ceased, to what was majorly deforested pastural land, will be of greater benfit to the environment due to the planting of trees and shrubs.

MTW has given me that oportunity. Without my employment here, mine and my sons life would be very difficult.
I am in full support of the extention to go ahead. Mine and countless hundreds of other families depend of this extention being granted.
The impact on our Bulga neighbours has been blown right out of perspective. This extention needs to go ahead, not just for the people employed here but for the greater communitee.
This mine gives generously to the communitee in many ways. If it closes, everyone loses.

I am writing to you in regards to why the Mount Thorley Warkworth mine should be granted its extension. I am a employee of Rio Tinto of over 4 years, and have been born and raised in the hunter for all of my 29 years. This extension means alot to the local community and its local people who are directly and indirectly benefits of this mine. The money that is generated by the mine goes along way to keep the hunter economy strong and continue to grow into the future. This mine site allows me to keep my family in the local community and spend our money.
The local people of bulga have been apposed to the extension due to the fact they have only moved to the area within the last 8 years and are adiment to weaken and distroy the local community economy and drive business and people out of local towns, as they will have to move futher away in search of work.
So in summary i fully support the extension and can only see benfits for the local community and its economy

Coal & Allied, through their community sponsorship development fund and site donations committees, have been able to provide significant funding for regional school programmes and school holiday activities - funding that is much appreciated in these areas. Should the activity of local mines such as Mount Thorley Mine, be reduced due to planning and approval constraints, then it is likely that the community benefits, such as the school assistance programmes, will be reduced.
As a result, I support any approval by the Department that will allow the continuation of mining by Coal & Allied at Mount Thorley Mine.

I believe with all the job losses in the hunter valley over the past 12 month and lack of new job opportunities without these new project the prospect of remaining in the hunter would be very low.
