Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)
On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex. A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site. An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

In my successful aplication for this employment I relocated to the Singleton area as a full time resident. My employment is not only impacted by this approval but also my residence in the immediate area. This in turn has an effect on the local econemy as my wages are predominently spent in the local community which supports local business and employment.

If we, like 1300 other RTCA employees were to relocate interstate in search of work this would have a dramatic impact on the local economy in the Hunter Valley. The local community will suffer and cripple so many businesses. As a result an increase of unemployment will be at an infinitely high number, far too many for the Government to manage. This will be a catastrophy to say the least. The flow on effect will be detrimental as local education institutes from daycare to college will see closures, all community services will cease, local supermarkets and trades and the like will close, to name a few. The Hunter Valley will be abandoned leaving only empty building structures. The economy at local, state and government levels will suffer significantly. If the mine is forced to close this will be an absolute absurdity.
Lets support the planning and plan for a brighter future for all.
