I object to the Wilpinjong Coal Mine Mod 3 – Pit 8 Extension. This project expansion goes completely against our state and federal climate goals. The project will:
1. Release over 25 MT of additional Greenhouse Gas emissions
2. It is the first stage of a bigger mine expansion and should be assessed as a new project
3. Mining to the boundary of Wollar Village is of significant concern to community health and safety. There is irrefutable evidence these projects cause respiratory issues, not to mention the diabolical impacts on the environment
4. The project will disturb an additional 155 ha:
• causing more loss of Aboriginal cultural heritage and spiritual landscape for Wiradjuri Nation
• destroying more important habitat for the nationally threatened Large-eared Pied Bat, Eastern Cave Bat, Regent Honeyeater and Koala
5. It will permanently alter and degrade alluvial groundwater sources and surface flows in the Wollar Creek catchment.
6. It will increase pollution through poorly assessed noise, dust, blasting, onsite coal ignition (spontaneous combustion), lighting and water contamination
7. It will increase social impacts, loss of amenity and ongoing disturbance of rural way of life
8. It slows the transition to clean energy future – competing with the Central West Renewable Energy Zone that starts at Wollar
9. This project is not needed to provide regional jobs – there is a huge workforce shortage for renewable energy projects in the Central West
10. There is no economic justification, the increased climate change impacts will cost more than public income generated through royalties and taxes

I have lived in this area since 2019 I currently work at Wilpinjong Coal Mine I have kids that attend the local school and a wife who works in the local supermarket our whole life is devoted to this area and all our money goes back into this local community. This mine has been a lifeline to at least 700 of my colleagues and the local businesses with millions of dollars rolling through annually due to this mine operations. Its commitment to rehabilitation is the best I have ever seen in 30 years in the industry. The whole area is so dependent on this sector that this community will be rocked to its core if this mine closes early. The mine also provides the coal to AGL that powers the state with the renewable sector being nowhere close to keeping the lights on is this country yet, so it makes no sense whatsoever to not extract what resources are in this area so close to what is established and currently working with a company that has the rehabilitation at the forefront of its mining record. This is an opinion of a man who pays his taxes feeds his wife and kids, proudly contributes to this community and loves to call this place home.

I have worked with Wilpinjong Mine throughout its construction and operation. There has been a genuine commitment from the operation to address its social license to operate and achieve outcomes that balance the needs and expectations of stakeholders and shareholders alike. I support the project extension on the operational performance exhibited to date and the commitments made for the future.

The mine is a great economical boost for the region. Over 600 people are employed through peabody wilpinjong providing long lasting careers. As a young Aussie working at wilpinjong I am able to actively save during one of the high priced times for housing and other essentials needed through life and wilpinjong actually supports the local community and wider through its economical impacts that have boosted the local region and wider for the last 2 decades and will hopefully continue to do so into the future through this extension project

I am writing to formally object to the proposed expansion of the Peabody Wollar coal mine near Mudgee. I urge the Department to reject this project for the following reasons:
1. Environmental Impact: Expanding the mine will cause significant harm to local ecosystems, including land, air, and water resources. The Wollar region contains important habitats for native flora and fauna, which will be threatened by further mining operations.
2. Climate Change Concerns: Coal is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Expanding coal mining at a time when urgent action is needed to reduce emissions is irresponsible and counterproductive to Australia’s climate commitments.
3. Community Health and Wellbeing: Residents in and around Wollar already experience noise, dust, and water impacts from current operations. Expansion will exacerbate these issues, putting local communities, including children and vulnerable populations, at risk of health problems.
4. Agricultural and Cultural Impact: The area supports farming and contains sites of cultural significance. Further mining could negatively affect soil quality, water availability, and heritage values.
5. Economic Sustainability: Continued reliance on coal mining is short-term and unsustainable. Investment should instead focus on renewable energy and sustainable industries that provide long-term jobs without harming the environment or public health.
For these reasons, I strongly oppose the expansion of the Wollar coal mine and request that the project be rejected.

As a current employee I see how well the company look after the environment before and after mining.
The community benefits from the mine economically Wilpingjong has put $170 million into the local economy in the last year as well as $36 million into wages to their employees
We need to keep coal mines alive to keep the power on!

I object on the following grounds:
1. The proposed expansion should not be assessed as a modification because it differs substantially from the current approved mine- it should be assessed as a new project.
2. If approved it will release over 25 MT of additional Greenhouse gas emissions
3. It will disturb an additional 155 ha, destroying important habitat for the Threatened Large-eared Pied bat, Eastern Cave bat, Regent Honeyeater and Koala. Also resulting in loss of Aboriginal cultural heritage.
4. It will permanently alter & degrade alluvial groundwater sources & surface flows in the Wollar Creek catchment.
5. It will increase pollution through poorly assessed noise, dust, blasting, onsite coal ignition (spontaneous combustion), lighting and water contamination.
6. It will increase the social impacts of loss of amenity and ongoing disturbance to the rural way of life.
7. By competing with the Central West Renewable Energy Zone that starts at Wollar it will slow the transition to a clean energy future.
8. The project is not needed to provide regional jobs as there is already a huge workforce shortage for renewable energy projects in the Central West.
9. There is NO ECONOMIC JUSTIFICATION - the increased climate change impacts will cost more than public income generated through royalties and taxes.

I support the wilpinjong pit extension due to the benefits it provides to the local community.
It provides jobs for a vast amount of people in the community which in turn helps support even more families.
Peabody also sponsor a good number of local events, businesses and infrastructure.
I in turn believe it would be of great benefit to the local community to go ahead with the pit extension at wilpinjong.

There are many miners from pits with shorter mine lives that will need jobs when theirs close.
NSW and Australia are nowhere near ready to turn off coal. Our renewable industry just isn't ready to take over and support the load, and our economy simply cannot afford to lose the incomes and taxes which are provided by mining. Not to mention the unemployment rate which would skyrocket.
Wilpi must expand.
